October 1916
The officer trained his black ebony eyes upon me. I fidgeted nervously, waiting for his verdict. He sighed and leant back into his chair, " it's true that we need more spies out there, Miss Smith... I just don't think you're ready to be posted to France. I know you want to get out there and make a difference, but this isn't a game! People die on these missions and I won't send a foolish, unprepared agent to her death."
"Bloody war" I muttered to myself as I cleaned. No one even wanted it in the first place. I took out my anger on the poor broom, killing it with every sweep.
They had arrived early in the morning, claiming that my hens where needed for their war efforts. In reality I knew that they just wanted to get a decent meal. I desperately tried to protect them. I begged for my two hens life's, they were the only thing that I had left in this world. But the Germans take everything, so why should they make an exception for me? I had to silently watch as they rung their necks.
All my efforts in 1916 had gone to waste. In helping in one war I had helped started another. I had suffered through so much only to have to live through another world war. I sat down heavily on a rickety, old, wooden chair. What was I going to do now?
