Chapter Two

Sunshine. So warm and bright. It coats over your whole body, and when your perched high in the tip tops of the trees like I am, the gentle rock and sway of the branches can lull you into a dream. I was slumped against a huge branch almost fifty feet off the ground. I could hear birds twittering and singing to each other among me, and barely any sunlight was obstructed by the leaves above. I leaned my head back, eyes closed, and urged myself not to fall asleep. The last thing I needed was to fall out of a tree, which would be just like me to do.

I let my eyes slip closed and just listened to the trees. I felt the warmth soak into my skin. I felt the wind grasping at tendrils of my wild, loose hair. I loved the smell of the air up here. I stayed up off the ground for awhile, enjoying the sereneness, until I heard the almost imperceptible sound of feet padding across the grass a few hundred yards west.

I shook myself out and looked down to the ground. A voice accompanied it. A soft lilting hum reached me and I knew immediatley who it was.

"Lys!" I said, and began scrambling down the tree, attempting grace as I dropped the last few feet to the ground. I could see her ahead of me, carrying a woven basket. I looked at her with a bright smile as I walked toward her. She smiled back widely, showing off her dimples.

Lysandra was a nymph like me. She had long, wild hair that was luciously black. Her  hazel eyes shone out of her long lashes and olive toned skin. I'd known her since 1917, and she was a close friend of mine.

"Evi! How are you, love? I heard you had some trouble with one of the local town boys earlier." She said, holding her arms out. I embraced her before smiling ruefully.

"I did. He was a cutie, but not quite my type." I winked at her before slinking towards her basket. She had to have food in there, didn't she?

"Ah, but who is nowadays. There's berries in there, if you're wondering." I snatched up her basket along with a handful of berries. We began walking side by side towards the general direction of where Lys lived, talking along the way.

I ended up staying the night. It was late at night, with the moon shining through the wide, glassless window like a pale balloon that I looked at Lys and told her what I'b been wanting to all evening.

"I'm having the dreams again," I said forlornly, pulling my knees to my chest. We were sitting against her small couch, talking.

She looked over at me, her eyebrows creased with worry. She threw her arms around me. "I'm sorry, Evi. I'm so sorry."

I closed my eyes. "It's okay." I refused to let the tears pricking behind my eyes flood over my cheeks. I blinked rapidly and took a deep breath. "I'm okay."

"You wanna talk about it?"

I shook my head. "No . . . no." A weak smile. "Thanks for being there for me."

"Of course." She smiled back and squeezed me tightly. Almost a century of friendship payed off.
