Will.
We've been in here for hours and I'm beginning to think that if I don't get out soon, I'll run mad. It is soooo boooriing! Why can't anything exciting happen, say, a thunderstorm. Wouldn't that be neat?"And this is our prize artefact, the ancient Aum inscription, blah, blah, blah..." the guide drones in a monotonous tone. It's a miracle I haven't dozed off yet. All of a sudden the sky goes dark.(I forgot to mention that ruins have no roofs). Then the Aum inscription begins to glow faintly. I look around franticly but apparently I'm the only one who has noticed the glowing."Anne..." I whisper to the girl beside me."I think that piece of paper thingy is glowing... "
"Shut up! Idiot" she suddenly exclaims, which makes me half leap of the ground. "I'm trying to learn here. And that 'paper thingy' of yours happens to be a three thousand year old artefact!"
I should have known she wouldn't believe me but there's no time to think about that as it starts to rain. It is a gentle drizzle at first, them it works it's way up to a full blown thunderstorm. The Aum inscription begins to glow much more visibly and draws attention."Whoa!"
the eighth graders chorus. A voice is suddenly chanting in my head, and I have a brief vision of the symbol," विष्णु"
Before I an even wonder what it is, I feel a sharp pain on my left arm and my vision dims.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wake up in a white room hours later and realise I'm in the ER. I look to the coots on my right and I see, Anna, Ross, Rúiz and Zeke.
My body feels like lead and my left arm stings, but I manage to slowly sit up."Wha...what happened?" I strenuously ask a nearby nurse. "You poor things! You were struck by lightning.Thankfully, you got to the hospital in time." She smiles heartily. "Don't worry you'll be out in no time." Struck by lightning! That explains the sting in my arm.
I glance at my left arm and I notice that there's no injury, but a strange tatoo.
That's funny, that wasn't there yesterday...
"Can I step out for a moment?" I hear Ross ask the nurse. So he's up too. I should ask him about the storm...A few minutes later we're out of the hospital.
"...It was like I was crazy! I kept hearing some weird battle cry in my head and next I knew I was in the hospital." Ross narrates his story to me in his rough western accent. Ross is an exchange student from Texas."Do where did the lightning strike you?"
"My left shoulder."
"Let me take a look at that..."Ross slips his jacket off his shoulders and shows his left shoulder to me. As I suspected, there's a tattoo on it. But it's different from mine- it's an eagle wielding a spear branded with the symbol: शिव
The symbol of Shiva Kumar Singh, the Hindu deva of battle and death. (I learnt that from history class).
"I wish you could see this, Ross."
"See what?"
He's craning his neck to get a glimpse of the mark. I pull a mirror from my back pocket. Why the hell do I have that in there? I hand the mirror to him. "Use this."
He takes it from me and after a few seconds he finally positions the mirror right ( with my help of course).
"Awesome!"
"Aren't you worried about that?"
"Nah, it's pretty cool."
I sigh deeply, Ross could be such an idiot sometimes.
"Let's go find the others."
Thankfully, we all live on the same street. What a coincidence!
"You go without me. Tell me all about it later." Ross says as he begins to walk home.end of chapter two
