Chapter Nineteen

    "How's that feel?"

I stood up with Derek's help and tested standing on my leg that had been cast and bound for nearly a whole week. Gail had come here personally this morning to see how my leg was. She had brought the cast saw only to find out I had shattered it a few days ago.

A wince slipped over my face, but I could manage the pain without a brace. "Sore and needing to be used again, but other than that, fine."

She smiled. "Now, I don't want you to do very much for the weekend. Your muscles need just a bit more to get back to what they used to be. Use a cane just for the weekend. Wolves heal fast, but still need to follow the same mending as everyone else."

Derek smiled brightly helping me sit back down. "Stay here." I blinked and then he was gone out of the room. Daemon shook his head at his own father chuckling. His father always looks so youthful when he's doing something for me or getting me something. Derek was like a giddy school boy sometimes.

Before I could open my mouth to ask what Derek was doing, he was bounding back into my bedroom with a cane in hand. A beautiful looking cane with mother of pearl in the shape of the three phases of the moon was embedded near the handle. The wood of the cane was almost a pure black with a reddish hint to it.

"I found this a long time ago among my father's things in a chest. It was only later that I found out the significance of the chest." He sat down next to me and pointed to the moon. "This is the symbol of the royal family that lead all."

My head snapped up to his. "But..."

Derek nodded. "I know. Remember what I told you about our history. That after the destruction of the royal line, many families banded together to overthrow those who murdered the first family. My father had kept from me that my family had been one of the families that was part of that. That my ancestor had found many things that had once been the royal families."

He smiled at me and I smiled at the cane. "So this is..." I snapped my mouth shut as I looked up to Gail. I was about to slip in front of someone who didn't know I was royal. That I was part of a line that was supposed to have been destroyed.

"It is now yours as you need it for now." Derek kissed my temple. "Have a great day at school princess." He hopped up and showed Gail out.

I pouted. "I'm still not used to him calling me that around others."

Daemon chuckled pulled me onto his lap. "Well, you are a princess." He smirked. "Once we mate, you'd be a queen not just because you're mine, but it's who you're destined to be."

My eyes went down to the cane. "Queen." I whispered not fully okay with the thought of me as a queen.

He tilted my chin up. "Don't worry about the title just yet. Only we knew your lineage. It'd be a while before we can show the world that you are a royal. First we need people who would stand behind us so you don't have to hide who you are."

I sighed deeply. "What if I don't want to be queen?" I raised my eyes to his. "What if I just want to be your mate?"

He frowned. "I don't believe fate brought us together and had you stay in the background. We need a leader. There are too many factions and more and more are turning rogue every year. A royal in power helped lesson the strife. Helped many rogues find balance. We need a royal in charge and you have the voice of authority. Fate choose you and I will not doubt her wisdom."

Rising to my feet, I walked a little before turning back to him. "But what if it isn't my generation to rise from the ashes? What if it were the next like my father did? He waited and stayed hidden. He didn't try to unite our kind. My parents hide in plain sight and away from the wolf world."
