Chapter 1: The Cruel World
Flashback. Nathanial’s Point of View.
I grabbed Lailah’s hand and ran through the streets of Rome. The cobblestones pierced my feet but I knew this was the only way. I sprinted through townsquare straight into the woods, hoping Lailah would be able to make it.
Lailah gasped in pain. “Are you ok Lailah? You have to bear with me! It’s not safe to have the child.” I whispered.
She started to pant quickly and she started gasping for breaths.
My eyes began to water after seeing what state she was in.
It was my entire fault. Why did I let her become like this? My stupidity was the reason why the Archangels had banished me from the heavens.
As I looked past Lailah’s head I saw the Archangels slowly begin to approach with their cruel yet beautiful faces. Their jet black hair was tied back behind tightly and their faces were set in an emotionless expression. Every wrinkle upon their face displayed their years of experience and their authority. Uriel’s smoky gray eyes pierced into mine as our eyes met for a second.
I gritted my teeth, grabbed Lailah, and carried her wedding style as I ran into the woods.Unfurling my wings, I flew over the woods. The wind blew against my face as I searched for a cottage.
Lailah was still gasping for breaths as she looked at me. Her gorgeous green eyes revealed how much she loved and trusted me. ME!? A cursed wretched fallen angel. “I love you Nathanial. Don’t leave me. Please.” She whispered. I stared at her guiltily.
How could she love a person who had ruined her life?
Finally after searching, I found a tiny cottage where we could stay.
I knocked on the door with Lailah in my hands. I hoped there was a doctor in there to help me. I prayed that we would have some hope for our poor ill-fated child.
An old nurse opened the door in surprise. Her eyes landed on Lailah who was panting rapidly in need of serious medical attention. Quickly the nurse shooed us in and told me to set Lailah down on the bed. I sat next to Lailah wiping the sweat dripping from her forehead and trying to calm her down. The nurse told me to leave the room so I waited outside in the starry night sky.
I felt like my prayers had been answered yet the thought of anything happening to Lailah and the baby made my heart throb. I waited outside for an hour listening to Lailah’s screams. Every scream I heard, my heart stopped in fear of anything happening.
Finally the nurse called me in.
When I walked in I saw Lailah’s hair flying everywhere. The sheets were scattered around the floor and everything was a mess.
However Lailah’s beautiful face was set with a smile and loving eyes as she looked down at our baby. I took a look at our child, knowing I wouldn’t be disappointed if she took after her mother.
I gasped. How had that happened? Her eyes…I had cursed my baby. Tears began to form when I saw my beautiful baby had the eyes of the Devil himself. What had I done!?
Suddenly the door flew open and crashed against the other wall. In fear I grabbed my baby child and hid her in the basket full of apples. There is now way they would hurt our baby.
Lailah’s face was set in shock as the Archangels approached her. I came up beside her trying to give her support and protect her from these cruel angels.
“Uriel, Michael, please don’t hurt her. I’m so sorry. I promise she can return to the heavens and I will never disturb her ever again.” I pleaded. Tears ran down my cheeks.
I begged them to pity me and Lailah.
“Michael, the blade.” Uriel commanded.
My eyes widened in fear for my wife. “Nooo!” I screamed.
Suddenly, my mouth was slammed shut and I couldn’t move my body. I was froze in that spot and I struggled powerlessly.
But in one swift motion, Uriel brought the blade across Lailah’s throat and I heard a helpless scream. I stared at her lifeless figure.
My body wasn’t frozen anymore so I stood up and walked over to Lailah. “Lailah, my love, wake up.” I patted her cheek gently. She would wake up. She’d not dead. I grabbed her shoulders and shook her violently with tears running down my face. “LAILAH. PLEASE WAKE UP! You can’t leave me! You can’t!”
I let her go and Lailah laid there lifeless with a slit across her throat, the blood soaking her gown.
My body was consumed with violent sobs as I stared at my love. This world was way too cruel. Why couldn’t they have killed me? Why did I have to live through this torture?
“It seems our work is done here Michael. We will be leaving Nathanial.” Said Uriel.
I grabbed onto Uriel’s foot. “ Please. Please kill me! Why are you doing this to me? What did Lailah ever do? It was my fault!.” I screamed in fury and despair.
“You know that you are immortal Nathanial and this is your punishment as well.” He stated calmly and with that he disappeared.
I silently cried when I heard a baby cry. My baby. Where is my baby! I uncovered the blanket from the basket of apples and pulled out my baby.
She looked so much like her mother. It was just her eyes, but surprisingly they had turned back into the same forest green shade as her mother. Had I been hallucinating? I cradled her against me and whispered soothing words.
“I’ll name you Autumn. You’re mother had always loved that name.”
