Shadow's POV:
Marley, the guard who watches my sector on Thursdays, is eating his usual tuna sandwich and potato chips. I can see the ring of keys hanging from his left index finger. I scan the keys until I find one that reads b278. The key that opens my cell.
Once Marley finished his lunch he leaned back against the wall across from my cell to take a nap. Once I was sure he was asleep I began talking to the prisoner in the cell across from mine. Although I have never seen him I can honestly say he is my only friend.
"Asher?" I asked in a whisper.
"I'm ready," His voice was soft and comforting but I could tell he was as nervous as I am. "Can you reach the keys?"
I looked for a piece of sharp wire that I hid under my bed of hay. A guard had beaten me with it a few weeks ago and forgot to take the weapon with him after he left. I found the wire and tried reaching for the keys with it. The end of the wire was curved so I could use it to latch onto the key ring.
I pushed the wire through the metal bars that hold me captive in my cell. I pushed my arm through as far as I could, trying to reach the keys. My heart started racing once I pulled the keys into my cell.
"I-I got them!" I laughed quietly before picking out my key and opening my cell.
"We're getting out!" Asher cheered as I walked over to his cell and unlocked his door. His hair was white and ended just below his shoulders. His eyes were the brightest shade of blue and made me feel safe. His clothes were tattered and stained with blood from getting in fights with guards and loosing. He was younger than I expected, 15 maybe 16 years old, about my age. He was beautiful.
"We still need to get to sector A and get past the guards." I added. Asher nodded and sighed.
Marley shifted in his sleep, looking like he was about to wake up.
"Let's go." Asher shot me a kind smile and began walking down the hall.
As the two of us walked down the the row of prisoners they begged us to take them with us. I felt bad for leaving them here to rot until they meet the executioner. Some of these people are in here for murder or theft, Asher and I are here for treason.
Once we reached sector A Asher and I changed into executioner uniforms that we found in the sector's storage closet. The two of us continued walking towards the front gates and once I saw the amount of guards blocking it I froze. Asher nudged me to keep moving and I obliged. We were inches away from freedom when we were stopped by a tall guard with long black hair.
"Where you off to?" His voice was stern and deep.
"Shift change." Asher answered. Hearing his calm voice soothed me.
The guard nodded and let us pass. The gates opened and we were out. Something was wrong, this was too easy. I looked at Asher and by the expression on his face I could tell he was thinking the same thing.
Once we reached the forest that is located behind the prison the alarm went off notifying all of the guards and executioners that we're missing. I broke into a sprint with Asher following close behind. I could hear the search dogs barking behind us and my pulse sped up.
"They're going to find us." I shouted.
"No they won't!" He inhaled. " Pi have a friend who lives near by. He'll hide us until its safe to keep moving."
After a good 10 minutes of full out sprinting we came across a log cabin. Asher told me that this was where his friend lived and that we could hide there until the morning.
So the first chapter...pretty short. I would have added more but thought this was a good place to stop at
