Murder, Domestic Abuse, and Parents on the naughty list??? Let's take a look at one of my new favourites!
Big Little Lies
By: Liane Moriarty
4.5 Hearts out of 5
Summary from GoodReads: Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:
Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She's funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline's youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline's teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline's ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).
Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn't be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.
New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.
Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.
Here are my thoughts on this book filled with introspect, multi-views, and stark honesty:
Moriarty brings us a fresh tale of what it takes to be a mother and just how kick ass women can be. I love how everything within the story begins interweaving.
I was not expecting a mystery when I first began to read it, but once I got my hands on the book I could not put it down.
Madeline, Celeste, and Jane bring us on a gripping journey through their lives. Each of these women are at crossroads within their lives, but it's the indisputable fact that the whole story wraps around is that someone is dead, but who did it?
I can honestly say that this book made me become a reader that races to the finish with books. I absolutely could not wait to figure out the mystery! This book keeps you on your toes with its drawn out mystery, but quick wits. I loved how unusual it was that you don't know who is dead, nor who did it.
This book is very balanced to keep up the comedy, but then also serious enough to dote on the underlying secrets in the story such as domestic abuse.
Don't take me wrong when I say this because it is not a laughing matter, but this was the most enjoyable book I have ever read about domestic abuse and murder. I cried in some places with a tissue box by my side, and then wound up laughing and then crying again from laughing so hard.
This book does not disappoint. In this story the parents are the ones on the naughty list.
Who knew elementary school parents at a fundraiser could be so deadly?
Let me know how you felt about this book surrounding the "mom" social circle. I for one can't wait to read this book again!
