I opened the door and felt the cool Canadian air on my face. I breathed in. The mountain air filled my lungs. I was glad we were on our school trip to Kananaskis right now.
It was spring, and there was still a chill in the air. I looked to my left, towards the mountains, and smiled. The pink sun was bathing white clouds, in a pale orange sky. The 7:00 am sunrises out here are the best. The frozen morning dew melted beneath my bare feet, and I pulled my jacket off my waist, and put it on. Every step I took, I felt like I was walking on a cloud.
My name is Amelia Fisher, but everyone calls me Mia. I'm 15 years old and, let's face it, a little happy-go-lucky. I love nature, and I'm also a little clumsy. I lived in Calgary Alberta. My best friend is Janie, although, she had recently moved away to a small town in British Columbia. I missed her a lot, but I needed to make some new friends, who lived here.
Serena and Lily came out of our cabin, talking and laughing. Following them were Cadence, and Bridget. All four of them were in my homeroom. Coming out of the cabin next to us is Michaela, Marie, and Serene. They were my friends too, but didn't mix well with Serena, Lily, Cadence, and Bridget.
I can't say the same about Andrea. Andrea was the girl who followed all the trends, and seemed to have a perfect life. She was a good person, and very kind. She tried so hard to make friends, but most people wouldn't accept her, though I didn't know why. Cadence, Bridget and I had become her friends, and she seemed happy now though. Andrea deserved friends.
"Mia!" Serena laughed. She waved me over, as she pulled her black, shoulder length hair into a ponytail. Her purple jacket was tied around her waist, and her arms were covered by a fuzzy blue sweater. Lily had a pair of black jeans on, and her cloth, maroon jacket. I walked over to them, and smiled.
"Isn't the sunrise beautiful?" I said, looking to the pink sky.
"Wow! I'm never up early enough to see this! It's amazing, Mia!" Serena smiled.
"It's beautiful." Lily gasped. I turned and re-entered our cabin. The warm floor was refreshment on my cold feet. I went to the far end of the warm wooden cabin, and clambered up to the top bunk, and pulled my pack up off of the peg it was hanging from. I unzipped the front pocket, and pulled out a pair of green fuzzy socks. I put them on, and zipped the pocket back up. I hung it from the left peg, on the opposite end of my pillow, and jumped down off of the top bunk. I landed on the floor, and reached under Serena's bed. I pulled my grey runners out, and tied them onto my feet.
I ran back out into the fringed air, and saw a fire had been started. A bunch of the girls were huddled around it and I joined them. I sat next to Cadence, and Bridget. The rising heat filled my body with warmth. I saw Andrea come up to us, wrapped in a blanket.
"Too early..." She muttered. A couple of other girls nodded in agreement.
"Geez. Afghanistan will be really hard to wake up then. I heard Noon here is 12:00 am there!" Marie sighed.
"You know, we'll all miss you, Marie. It'll be a long month." Michaela said. I nodded and sighed. Marie was going to visit some family in Afghanistan for a month. That week was her last week in Calgary for a month. We were all going to miss her. Marie had become a staple in all of our lives. I looked over to Marie, and noticed she was looking at me. We made eye contact for a moment, and then she looked into the blazing orange fire. We all sat in silence for a moment, until suddenly, a loud bell was heard. The emergency bell. Everyone, including me, ran for our cabin, grabbed a jacket, and any valuables. I grabbed my jacket. I didn't need to get anything else. I don't bring valuables to camps. We all ran for the main hall, which was past the boys' camp. I saw guys running to meet with their friends, and goofing off. Immature. They thought it was just a drill. I could feel that it was something different. I burst through the doors in the main hall, and saw a huge fire.
"Get away!" Some teachers yelled. Others barked out orders. I ran back outside, and dashed down to our cabin. We had 2 fire extinguishers. I grabbed one, and heard Erin calling for me to throw her one. I did, and she caught it. With fear twisting a knot in my stomach, I ran back towards the main hall.
"Get out of the way!" I screamed as Erin and I ran inside. I pulled the peg from the fire extinguisher, and aimed at the blaze.
"Mia! Look out!" Erin yelled, and I turned around. The wall behind me had just caught fire. I screamed, and aimed the extinguisher at it.
"Amelia!?" My social teacher, Mrs. Gusuren yelled. She ran towards me, and grabbed me by the arm. I dropped the fire extinguisher and wiped my forehead. The fire is way too warm for me. I felt like I was about to pass out from it. "Hold on, Amelia. We'll be out in a second." She said, dragging me towards the doors.
"Mia!" Lots of people yelled as they readied themselves to help me.
"Mia, hold on!" Serena yelled.
"What about Erin!?" I heard Bridget scream. Erin! I'd totally forgotten about her in my fear.
"Erin!" I screamed. Mrs. Gusuren pushed me outside and went back in, looking for Erin. I dropped down to my knees, gasping. Lily helped me up, and I wiped my face. Serena looked at me with a look of despair. I looked down to the ground. Erin would be alright... I hoped.
"Is Erin still trapped in there?" Bridget demanded. I saw Mr. Cooper coming out of the building with Keith and Henry. Mr. Cooper nodded. Bridget looked down and closed her eyes. A tear formed in her eye, and fell to the ground, making the grey cement brown. I looked back inside and saw Erin, screaming for help.
"No, Erin!" Cadence screamed. I looked to Serena, and she nodded. I ran off towards the direction of the river, and watched as Serena ran and grabbed two buckets. She caught up to me, and passed me one. I felt a rush of adrenalin overcome me and I ran faster than I ever had before. One word repeated over and over again in my head.
Erin, Erin, Erin.
I ran into the water and filled my bucket. I handed it off to Serena, and she handed me the empty one, and I filled it. I ran back around the trees and past the hard cement. I ran past Serena, and she gasped. I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. I ran up to the main hall, and handed my bucket off to Mr. Cooper. Serena caught up and handed her bucket to me. The cold water was heavy, but I carried it inside, and threw it at Erin. Mr. Cooper did the same, and she was soaked. The fire around her was gone, and Mr. Cooper pulled the two of us outside. He told everybody to run down to the river, because the fire was too big for us to put out. We were going to lose the building.
I watched as the flames in the distance burnt our main hall to ashes. The people who worked here had just lost everything. And I wanted to know why.
