Harry stared into the eyes of his lover.
"You know, we were together many times in the past. Your name was even Louis. I think it was around the seventeenth century. No one knew about us. We had to be the only gay couple in the world!" Harry said to Louis, who had nothing but utter fascination in his eyes."Like...we were meant to be together?" He asked, head resting upon his palm.
Harry shrugged, "Something like that. I always find you in different lives. I've been looking for you."
Louis cocked his head to one side. "So what happens when I die?" He asked, leaning more towards Harry on the opposite side of the table.
"I mourn, I guess. It takes hundreds of years for you to reincarnate, so I have to continue on in my life until I find you. Then, I have to win you over all over again."
Louis smiled and moved his seat so he was at Harry's side, leaning into his shoulder. "You do a damn good job every time."
Harry let out a laugh. "Thank you, I've perfected the skill over thousands of years."
"Wait," Louis said, oddly abruptly. "We won't grow old together. I will age, you won't."
Harry bit his lip, Louis was right, he always connected the dots fairly quickly.
"You don't have to grow old. Be like me Louis. It's a bit of a process, but we can finally be together...forever," Harry urged.
"I'll have to watch my friends and family die..."
Harry nodded. "It's a hard decision, I know. But don't you want to be with me?"
Sighing, Louis grabbed Harry's hands. "I do, and I always will. But I want to enjoy this life right here. Maybe later I'll suddenly decide living through it all is what I want. But today isn't that day. I have so many questions still–"
"–You always say that."
"Huh?"
Harry straightened up. "You always tell me that, and then, when you're on your deathbed, I beg you one last time and you tell me no."
Louis shrugged. "I don't know what to say..."
"It's fine. I'll just find you again in a few hundred years."
"Do we always have the same conversations in our other lives?" Louis asked. Harry shook his head.
"No, but certain ones do come up, just worded differently. We wouldn't if you'd just become an immortal."
"What happens when I've done it all? I can't just quit the whole "immortal" thing can I?"
"No you can't."
"Don't you get bored? You're a master at basically everything."
"There's always something new to learn, someone new to meet. Sure, it can be tedious, but only if you make it."
"Won't people be suspicious if you never age? I mean, you've looked like you're twenty for how long?"
"A while. You ask so many questions."
"Well I have a lot more."
"Let's enjoy this life, Louis. And maybe, in a few years, you'll decide to be my love forever."
"Maybe."
Harry knew deep down that the 'maybe' that Louis had given him was a polite no. But he would take it any day. He pulled Louis out of the coffee shop and pulled him into a kiss. Their lips fit perfectly together like Harry knew they did. If only he could convince Louis ...
He had to.
