The first thing I notice when I wake up is roll onto my side, blinking at the light sneaking through my curtains. My phone says 8:12 a.m.
Late for him.
I sit up slowly, listening.
There's no clatter from the kitchen. No coffee machine humming. No footsteps pacing.
I step out into the hallway in oversized shorts and one of his old t-shirts I've basically stolen at this point.
The apartment smells like coffee — faint, but there.
His door is open.
Bed made.
Of course it is.
I check the kitchen.
There's a mug in the sink.
One plate on the drying rack.
His tie draped neatly over the back of a chair.
He left early.
Again.
I lean against the counter, arms folded.
He didn't wake me up.
Not surprising.
Still.
I grab my phone.
Two unread messages.
One from him:
6:03 a.m.
Asshole: Left early. Don't wait up tonight.
Short. Clean. Efficient.
The other from Ezra.
Ez: Dinner's still Saturday. Don't bail. Raina will murder you.
I snort despite myself.
I text back:
Vi: I wasn't bailing. Dramatic.
Three dots appear almost immediately.
Ez: You were 100% considering it.
He's not wrong.
Shut up.
Another bubble pops up.
Ez: Also... don't tell Matío yet but we might have something to tell you guys.
