She walked into the classroom, a million thoughts spinning in her head, and stared at the uniform-clad students. Her vision was clouded by inner nervousness and all she saw were blurred hostile faces. Prof. Marlo introduced her to the class, "Class, this is Mirilae Hale, she is a transfer from Europe here to join our school, please give her a warm welcome!"They just stared, most of them looked pretty stunned and others looked just amused. Then, the whispers broke out. One girl called out, "If you're from Europe then why do you sound American?"
Miri stared at the girl, out of all the questions to ask she chose that? She smiled shakily, "My parents are technically American and a lot of people at my old school sounded like this, so that's why."
Prof. Marlo clapped his hands to interrupt the next wave of whispers and said, "Is there anything you would like to greet your new classmates with, Miss Hale?"
She paused and then said, "I'm looking forward to working with you!" she tried her best to sound genuinely pleased. It probably worked, as several people rolled their eyes and others just kept on staring at her.
Prof. Marlo smiled, "You may sit over there," he pointed to the second to last table in the left row, next to the windows, "Next to Tristan Stone."
She nodded and turned, frozen in place when she saw 'Tristan Stone's' face. He was the boy that had practically electrocuted her the other day! Just my luck!
At a cough from Prof. Marlo, she composed her many raging feelings and walked to the back, dropping down into her seat. She ignored Tristan Stone presence and began to play with a chipped piece of polished wood in the corner of her desk.
Then the professor made an announcement that made her want to bang her head against the wall, "Tristan will be your socium, in more simple words: your "buddy". He is responsible for showing you around the school, giving you hints and tips, just in general making sure you have all the help you need. You were chosen according to your academic, arts and physical compatibility. This was done according to your house test, so there was no biased in this matter. I trust you will get along well enough." He clapped his hands to get the attention of the now noisy classroom.
And with that he turned around. It didn't seem like that was about to happen any time soon, considering their first meeting. Miri was shocked. She was supposed to rely on some crazy and violent boy, who urgently needed anger management, to drive her new school experience. She laughed sarcastically, quietly to herself. This is just great, now what? She looked at Tristan for his reaction, but his face was a blank slate. That was, until he noticed that she was looking at him.
He hissed in her ear, "I am not planning on baby-sitting you, so don't even bother asking me to help you with anything."
His words angered her and she furiously hissed back, "Suit yourself, it's not like you would be much help anyways!"
Apparently he was flippant and arrogant as well as violent! She turned her head away and refused to look at him for the rest of homeroom. She mostly examined all the people in the room to get a feel of their personalities, until Prof. Marlo announced that homeroom was finished. She grabbed her bag, slung it over her shoulder and walked away without a single glance back. She found Ella, who gave her a confused look at her cold and angry expression.
While they were walking out, Miri quietly said, "Well my socium is a total arsehole!"
Ella laughed, "Yeah, he kind of is. But it is rather entertaining sometimes!"
Miri looked at Ella incredulously, "You talk to that infuriating human?"
Ella nodded, "My socium is his best friend, Kaiden Chandler."
