The warehouse stayed quiet long after the mysterious man left.

Too quiet.

The sound of the door slamming still echoed in my head, bouncing around my thoughts like a warning I couldn't ignore. My fingers tightened around the gun Lorenzo had given me, the cold metal suddenly feeling heavier than before.

"Who was that?" I asked again, my voice sharper this time.

Lorenzo didn't answer right away. He walked over to the table, slowly placing the remaining weapons back in their cases with careful precision, like he was buying himself time.

"Lorenzo," I pressed, stepping closer. "You said I'm part of this world now. So stop treating me like I'm not."

His shoulders stiffened slightly at that.

Finally, he turned to face me.

His dark eyes studied me for a long moment, calculating something behind that guarded expression. Then he sighed quietly and rubbed a hand across the back of his neck.

"That was Enzo," he said.

"Enzo who?" I asked.

"Enzo Vitale," he replied. "One of Giovanni's former men."

My stomach tightened.

"Former?" I repeated.

"Si," Lorenzo said slowly. "Former. He defected six months ago."

"Defected to you?"

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately, which told me everything I needed to know.

"Oh my god," I breathed. "You're working with him."

"Careful with your tone," Lorenzo said calmly, though his eyes sharpened. "You don't understand the situation."

"Then explain it to me," I shot back.

For a moment the tension between us thickened, like a storm cloud building above our heads. But instead of shutting down like he usually did, Lorenzo stepped closer.

"You want to be part of this world?" he said quietly.

I nodded.

"Then listen."

His voice dropped lower.

"Enzo knows Giovanni's operations. Safe houses. Weapons shipments. Routes. He's been feeding me information."

"That sounds useful," I said slowly. "But also extremely suspicious."

Lorenzo's mouth twitched slightly, almost like he was impressed.

"Exactly."

"So you don't trust him."

"No," Lorenzo said bluntly. "I trust that he wants Giovanni dead."

That didn't make me feel any better.

"Why?"

Lorenzo's gaze darkened.

"Because Giovanni killed his brother."

The warehouse fell silent again.

I felt the weight of that settle in my chest. Revenge. In this world, revenge seemed to drive everything.

"And he came here today because...?" I asked carefully.

"To warn me."

My heart skipped.

"Warn you about what?"

Lorenzo hesitated.

That was rare.
