The werewolf is the most known shape-shifter. This means that a werewolf can shift from their human form to a creature unlike no other. However, when a werewolf turns for the first time, they will have a lack of self control. A key thing to remember that a werewolf cannot shift into a real wolf. The only difference is they tend to grow facial hair, fangs and pointed ears. However, throughout the season, you do see some werewolves take different forms, but that is because they are different types. It is also possible to shift into a real wolf, but it is very rare for that to happen. It takes a lot of practice for any werewolf to learn how to control themselves, this is something they are either taught from their alpha or teach themselves a period of time.
Heightened senses
Sight: When a werewolf makes their eyes glow, it gives them an ability to see in a different light. What that means is, werewolves can have inferred sight, they will be able to see anything living due to their body temperature.
Hearing: Werewolves have heightened hearing even when they are not in their true form. As long as they concentrate, they can hear a long distance. For example, in Teen Wolf, werewolves can hear from inside a classroom to outside the building which was seen in the first season when Scott could hear Allison before she entered the building.
Smell: Just like any animal, werewolves have better smell. They are able to smell things that the average human nose cannot pick up on. An example of this is when Scott became a werewolf, he could smell the old chewing gum that was in Stiles' pocket when they were out in the woods looking for his inhaler.
Abilities
Speed: A great addition to being a werewolf is you develop super speed. Typically, you wouldn't be faster than a Vampire (Just an example, I know Vampires don't exist in Teen Wolf) however you would be faster than any human. The super speed can be done when a werewolf is in their human form as well as their true form. To do this, the werewolf just needs to run and their speed will just keep increasing until they reach their maximum potential. However, when a werewolf does shift into their truth form, it is quite common for them to run on all fours like a real wolf would do.
Strength: The super strength is adapted from a real wolf but stronger. These creatures have the ability to lift cars, throw people a far distance, and can even manage to throw someone through a wall which is seen on the show first when Derek and Scott are having a fight in Derek's home.
Healing: Due to being supernatural, werewolves have the ability to heal faster than any human. Depending on the severity of the injury determines the speed of the healing process. Typical injuries are gone within 24 hours at the most, unless the injury contains Wolfsbane which is poisonous to werewolves, causing the healing process to be a lot slower.
Pain absorbing: This is an additional ability that takes a long time for werewolves to master, so not all werewolves are able to do this. If someone is suffering physical pain, werewolves are able to hold their hands and absorb some of their pain. It doesn't take their pain away completely, but is has significant help to reducing the amount of pain someone is suffering. The way the pain is absorbed is through the veins of the werewolf. When a werewolf is holding someones hand absorbing their pain, their veins turn black as they are reducing the amount of pain in the person they are absorbing from.
Flashback vision: This is something only alphas can do. They can dig their claws into someone's neck and see visions of what they have experienced, and what they are thinking. It isn't shown a lot in Teen Wolf, maybe around three to four times in total throughout the whole series.
Shifting
Typical werewolf: When a werewolf shifts, they have glowing eyes, fangs, claws, side burns, pointed ears and a crease in their forehead.
Full/real wolf: Some werewolves have the ability to transform into a full/real wolf if they have evolved, and that is if they are strong enough to do it. Their eyes still glow, only they will look like an actual wolf while still having all their abilities when they shift.
The beast: A rare power hungry moment caused Peter Hale to shift into a beast. He was unlike any werewolf and his shift has only ever been see once which was in season one of the series. He is a giant black beast, nothing about his full shift resembles a werewolf. However, he is able to half shift too which gives him the typical werewolf appearance. As the series progresses, Peter does become a normal werewolf in the end which is the typical looking one.
Twins: Lastly if you have sibling alphas, twins, you can morph into one huge alpha werewolf. This was shown with Ethan and Aiden as they were from a pack of alphas. The twins can half shift into the typical werewolf appearance. However, they are a unique pair which is why they was in the pack of alphas as they were able to morph into one werewolf as their unique shift.
Werewolf hierarchy
Alpha: This is the leader of the pack, and the only werewolf which has the ability to turn humans into werewolves.
Beta: These are normal werewolves that are part of a pack, who follow their alpha or an alpha they associate themselves with.
Omegas: The lone wolf. Very rare and only seen once in Teen Wolf, but spoken of a few times. These werewolves travel alone, and do not have a pack to stick with.
Despite the typical werewolf hierarchy, any part of it can change. It is possible for Alphas to become Beta's again and Beta's can of course become Alpha's by stealing the power from an Alpha or becoming a true Alpha which is a rare occurrence.
Eye colours
Red: Alpha werewolves have red coloured eyes. It makes them stand out compared to other werewolves because you can only have one alpha per pack, unless you come from the original pack of alphas.
Yellow: Any average werewolf can have this colour. It just means they are a normal werewolf.
Blue: The final eye colour is for werewolves who have taken an innocent life. Their eyes turn blue as a permanent reminder of this.
How to become a werewolf
To become a werewolf there are two possible ways. The first way is to have the bite of an alpha which will turn you into a werewolf. The second way is to become a truth alpha. This is a very rare occurrence as you must be a pure alpha who hasn't taken an innocent life in order to possess the power to become a true alpha.
Weaknesses
Wolfsbane: This is poisonous to werewolves, it causes then to shift with lack of control and can kill them if there is too much of it in their system.
Mountain ash: This applies to all supernatural creatures, a circle of mountain ash acts as a barrier that werewolves and other supernatural creatures cannot cross.
