Torchwood.
I had looked it up. I looked up Captain Grey. I looked up blue box. Nothing. Nothing that helped.
Who was this Captain Grey? What did he know about the blue box? Why did he want to find it?
It had been a week since Captain Grey had found me. I had considered calling him. I even wrote him an email, telling him that I had seen the blue box. But I couldn't send it. Something told me not to trust him.
I looked around at the trees. Peaceful. My pulse was slowing from today's run. School had ended, finally. I had managed to get okay grades, even though I had dropped off on homework in the weeks after Lily's dissapearance. I closed my eyes and felt the late spring wind blow through my auburn hair. I listed to its sound. It's whooshing, moaning....
My eyes popped open. That wasn't the wind! That was the sound I had heard on the day Lily disappeared! I stood, running toward the sound. Dodging the trees and sprinting past startled pedestrians, and suddenly there it was. The blue box. Right in the middle of the park. Police box was prominently written on top.
I hesitated. Could I really knock? I remembered the assurance with which Lily had run in. I rapped on the door twice. Then I stood there.
I had no idea who could be about to open that door.
Finally, the door was pulled in.
A man poked his head out. He had shortly cropped black hair and was wearing a leather jacket. He looked at me for a long while. "Who are you?" He asked.
I didn't know what to say. Why was this guy just standing in a little box? He could be insane. This could be the man that kidnapped my best friend.
"Where's Lily Thomas?" I finally asked.
He looked at me for a long time. I couldn't tell if he was angry or confused or sad.
Finally he moved aside and opened the door wide to let me in. I hadn't expected that. If I went in, I might never come out. I might end up just like Lily. But Lily had run into this box like everything she ever wanted was locked away inside. I was curious. I walked in.
The man stepped aside as I entered, he smelled like wet leaves and looked like the kind of random stranger you would see in the drug store, nod to, and then never see again. He had big ears, a thin face and a long nose beneath intense eyes.
I looked away to take in my surroundings and caught my breath. It was huge. There was a control console in the middle covered in buttons and levers and a wide bridge around it, with stairs leading to balconies. The walls were wide and covered in glowing round things. There is no way that all of this could fit into that little blue box.
"It's... It's...."
"Bigger on the inside." He confirmed. "It's called the TARDIS. It's my time machine and can go anywhere in space as well. Not magic. Not hallucination. Just technology."
"It's alien." I breathed. I turned to the strange man. "Are you...?"
"Timelord. I look human, but I've got two hearts. Are you okay with this?"
I wanted to scream no! I wanted to ask more, but then I remembered why I had come. "Where's Lily Thomas?"
The man looked at me for a long time. Again, I couldn't quite put a finger on his emotion. Grief, pity, regret?
His face cleared and he stepped around me. "I'm called The Doctor, I fly around in my TARDIS and I save people."
"Where is she, Doctor?"
He began flipping a few switches, walking around the console and checking things. "TARDIS, that stands for time and relative-"
"Doctor."
"-dimension in space. It can go anywhere. People sometimes travel with me."
"Doctor!" I screamed. He froze, back facing me. "Where is Lily Thomas?"
The Doctor's head fell. "She's dead."
I fell back onto the railing. Dead? My best friend gone? What had he done to her? My grief blazed away in a flash of anger. It was his fault. What had he done? "How?" I spat.
"We were attacked by the Veshlar. I thought I could reason with them. They were only a few of them left in that species. But they killed her."
Tears fell freely from my eyes. "What happened to them?"
The doctor turned around, his expression black as night, his eyes burning with an awful wrath. "As I said. There were only a few left."
I felt pleasure, but not satisfaction. "Why would you even bring her there?"
"I thought I could handle it."
I laughed. It was probably childish and cruel, but I couldn't help it. "You thought? Are humans that disposable to you?" I took a moment. "What did you do with the body?" I asked.
"I burned it. Then I scattered the ashes and left a grave.
"Take me." I demanded.
He looked at me in shocked rebellion. I didn't think he would at first, but then he flipped a lever and the ship gave a violent shutter. "As you wish." He said.
