Run Away

I took a deep breath, this was it. This was the day. The day everything would change.
I looked around my old room. It was small and plain. The walls were an off white and the carpets were dirty and stained. Half smiling I looked around the room and closed the door for the last time.
With my heavy backpack slung over my right shoulder I walked towards the front door of the little trailer house. Just then the floor let out a loud, aching creek that echoed through the entire house. I froze in my tracks.
It was to late... "Saaaam!"
I gulped at the sound of his voice. "SAM! Get your ass over here!!"
"Yes..?" I turned on my heal to face him.
"Go get me a drink!" His voice slurred from the alcohol he had already consumed.
"Okay, do you want some water?" I asked innocently. He slammed his fist down on the end table.
"Damnit Sam! Don't you ever learn?!?" He stood up and took a couple steps towards me. He towered over me. I braced myself for what was to come. He lifted his hand, but no blow came. Instead a gentle hand landed a top my head. "Such a pretty young lady." He whispered. I shut my eyes tight.
He then walked towards the kitchen to grab a beer. I saw my chance then and I took it. Quietly I slipped out of the door. Never to return.
The cool night air felt amazing. I walked down to the end of the street where I had my car parked. I got into the drivers seat and started the car. The whole time my heart was pounding. Every inch of my body felt numb. Terror creeped into my mind.
I was about to turn off the car and forget it, when I could hear him scream my name from houses away. I let out a breath and pulled out of my parking spot. No turning back now.
"Goodbye dad." I said as I drove off into the night.
I had no idea where I was going or how I'd get there or what I'd do when I got there.

I could feel myself drifting to sleep, my head nodded and I jerked upright. I decided it was time to stop for the night. I began looking around for road signs or any civilization.
It was now 3 a.m, I'd been driving for hours. My eyes fell upon a sign that read "Tom's Truck Stop Next Exit". I flicked on my blinker and pulled on to the off ramp.
I pulled into the parking lot. Turning off my car, I groggily crawled into the backseat and shut my eyes. Almost instantly I was fast asleep.
Hours later, I awoke to the sound of yelling not far away from my car. Rapping my blanket close around me, I peeked out the window. It was pretty dark, but I could vaguely make out five men.  They were in the mist of a very loud argument.
One of the men looked as if he was the leader of three guys and they were all facing the other man, ready to attack. I felt bad, but he probably deserved what ever fate he was about to receive.
Laying back down, my mind wandered to all the times my fathered had laid hands on me. I would cry and beg him not to. He'd always tell me that I was getting what I deserved, that he did what he did because he loved me. I sat back up and looked out the window.
The leader of the little gang swung a punch at the guy who was alone, hitting him square in the face. Those four men could easily kill him. Just then I decided I needed to help the poor guy. Whatever was going on, he didn't deserve to get beat to death. Besides, Four against one wasn't fair at all.
I jumped up into the drivers seat of my car and started it. I rolled down the passenger side window and drove over to the group of men. I swung my car around so the open window faced the guy in need of help. "Get in!" I yelled.
Without a second thought he jumped into the seat beside me and I slammed on the gas. I swerved around semis and other cars. I could see one of the men in my rear view mirror, he pulled out a hand gun and aimed at my car. I think my newly acquired passenger saw it too. "get down!" He yelled. Instead I pulled behind an old semi, just in time to hear a shot ring in my ears. The exit to the interstate was now visible and I drove towards it like my life depended on it. Well, my life actually did depend on it.
I drove out onto the already busy highway. My heart was pounding and the sun was beginning to rise.
I looked back, the truck stop was far behind us. "Yeah! We did it!" I shrieked. Just then I remembered the stranger in my car. Looking over at him, I noticed he looked confused and terrified.
He stared into my eyes and mouthed "thank you."
