The car was spinning. There was a dear in the road and I swerved to try and miss it, but the car lost control on the gravely high way. We came to a sudden stop in the ditch.
I banged my arm up a bit, but that was it. My heart was racing. Every inch of my body shaking. I looked over at Harry. He seemed unfazed. He simply reached over and switched off the ignition. Then opened the car door and stepped out.
A few seconds later my door was being opened and Harry stood outside, reaching his hand out to me. "Watch your step." He cautioned as I joined him outside. He hugged me. "It's okay. It's okay Sam. We're fine." He reassured me, rubbing my back.
He released me from his warm embrace and we walked around the vehicle to inspect the damage. The back two tires were up against a barb wire fence and they looked as if they were punctured. It was a pretty steep ditch as well, there's no way we'd be able to drive out.
"Do you have a phone?" Harry questioned. I shook my head.
"That's an unnecessary bill that I can't afford." I replied. He nodded in agreement. By now the sun had set and it was completely dark. The highway traffic had decreased to hardly a car every hour.
"I think that there is a town not to far ahead." Harry said. He scanned the distance. I could see a few lights up ahead also.
"So, we start walking?" I asked. My heart still pounding, trying to escape from its home in my chest. I took a deep breath.
"I suppose so." He said. We climbed up the steep incline of the ditch and onto the edge of the highway.
"I'm so sorry Harry." I said. I felt as if I'd let us both down. He put his long arm around me.
"The only one that needs to be sorry is that stupid ass deer, who does he think he is?" Harry replied. I giggled a little. "It's going to be okay Sam. I'm here for you." My heart finally slowed to a normal pace.
"At least it's not raining!" I pointed out. Just after the words had escaped my mouth a large clap of thunder rang through the sky. I clutched Harry's arm. The loud noise startled me.
Harry looked up. It was to dark to see any clouds, but there was no stars or moon visible. We both quickened our steps. "Is it going to rain?" I asked, my voice coming out as a whisper.
"It's possible." Harry replied, his voice was deep with concern. As we walked, the sky lit up with bolts of lightning, which were followed by the rumbles of thunder. We'd walked for, what must've been an hour or two. The lights of the town ahead seemed to only get farther away.
My steps began to slow and my feet drug across the ground. Harry grabbed my hand. He was so warm and still full of energy. I felt like falling on the ground and sleeping for an eternity. "Come on Sam. Keep going." He encouraged me. His words sounded slushed together though, everything was getting blurry.
Something was happening to me, but I'm not sure what. My heart rate was quickening. My breath became fast and short. I stopped in my tracks and stumbled to the ground, rain began to fall from the sky. It was a complete down poor. "Harry." I tried yelling, but my voice was gone I gasped for breath.
Everything was spinning, I fell face first into the ground. I clawed at the ground, trying to get up. With every second life became, more and more, blurred and distant. I could hear Harry yelling my name, but it sounded as if he was miles away and his voice was a mere echo.
The last thing I could remember was him picking me up. I lost touch then. Everything went blank. We were soaked from the rain.My eyes fluttered open. The sun steamed in to where I was. Where was I? I looked around, I was in a little room. The walls were white, there was flowery drapes covering the window. There was an old wooden dresser in the corner of the room and other than that there was just the bed I was in.
I was covered by a large, plush quilt and to my surprise I had no clothes on. I racked my brain for any memories of the night before, what happened? Then everything came back to me, like I'd open the flood gates. Where was I though? How'd I get here? And where the hell is Harry?
I began to get up, when I remembered I was in the nude. I quickly fell back in to the warm bed. Then wrapped the blanket around myself and went to go look inside the dresser. It was full of old doilies and other pointless crocheted items. I made my way to the window and peaked out of the curtain.
As far as I could see, was rolling hills and fields. The sky was bright blue and the sun shone hot in the sky. I scanned the area for any signs of life, but, to my disappointment, saw nothing. Just then a small voice sounded from behind me. "Oh good you're up."
I almost screamed. Quickly I turned around and was face to face with a woman. She must've been about forty-five. She had kind, blue, eyes; that reminded me of the sky. Her thin lips were forming a smile and her brown hair was streaked with grey.
"Uh, where am I?" I asked. She sat down on the bed and motioned for me to join her. Hesitantly I plopped down on the soft mattress.
"At about four in the morning, your friend wandered over here and pounded on the front door. My husband, George, and I didn't know what to think. We very rarely get visitors way out here, especially at such an ungodly hour. We made our way to the front door And were greeted by Harry holding you in his arms. His face was filled with panic. We knew something was wrong and we quickly let him in. He explained how you'd collapsed and passed out after getting in a little car accident.
Any way. We got Harry some of George's old clothes to wear. I dried off best I could and tried to get you warm. The closest town is an hour away and there's no doctor there anyway. We did what we could. You seem fine now, but something was terribly wrong." She stopped talking, allowing her words to sink in. I had no idea what had happened to me last night. I felt so bad for Harry too. I wish I could talk to him.
She left to go find me something to wear. With in a few minutes. She was back with an armful of clothes. She set them on the bed. "See if any of these fit you." She said sweetly. "I'll go warm you up some breakfast." I nodded.
"Thank you so much, erm..?"
"Laura." She said.
"Thank you so much Laura." I said. She nodded and left me alone to get dressed. I pulled on a pair of jeans and an old flannel. The jeans looked as if they came straight from the early 90s. The flannel was red and cozy. After I was clothed I made my way down stairs, following the heavenly sent of bacon.
I found Laura standing over the stove frying up a couple pancakes. I took a seat at the little wooden table in the kitchen. They had an adorable old farm house.
She turned around, holding a plate. It was stacked high with fluffy, golden pancakes and three beautifully cooked pieces of bacon. My nose took in the heavenly smell and I couldn't wait to devour the whole meal. I hadn't had a real meal in awhile. This entire trip had consisted of nature valley bars and energy drinks.
"Thank you so much!" I exclaimed, as I greedily excepted the hot plate.
"You're welcome." She laughed. "Your clothes are in the dryer, but you can just keep what I gave you. There's no way I'd ever squeeze into the jeans again." I smiled, my cheeks stuffed full.
I gulped down my last bite and chugged some fresh milk. I felt as if My stomach would erupt. Laura grinned. "It's always good to see someone enjoy my cooking!"
I giggled, "sorry, I was hungry. What time is it any way?" I asked.
"Must be noon." She replied. "Would you mind running outside and finding the boys? I'm sure they're ready for lunch."
I agreed instantly. She supplied me with some boots and a coat. I ran out towards the barn to find Harry. The sound of wood being chopped could be heard, coming from behind the large red building.
I slowed to a walk and followed the sound. Once I reached the back of the barn I found Harry. His back was to me, thankfully, because I think my jaw dropped at the sight of him. He was swinging an axe in repetition, wood flying as he did so. He was shirtless, sweat glazed his skin and his muscles rippled every time he swung.
I stopped dead in my tracks and just stared. He swung the axe down one last time and stuck into the chopping block. He ran his fingers through his long curls and took a deep breath. I waited for him to turn around. My heart racing.
Before I knew it, he'd spun around. His eyes lighting up at the sight of me. "Sam!" He called. Running over to me with his arms spread out. Soon enough I was in his warm embrace.
"Gross you're sweaty!" I finally said. He took a step back.
"I'm so glad you're okay!" He said, completely ignoring my comment. I laughed a little and nodded.
"Thanks to you." I said.
Just then an older gentleman came into view. He must've been Laura's husband. "Hi I'm George!" He said as he walked over and held his hand out. I smiled and shook his hand. "Good to see you up."
"Lunch is ready, if you're hungry." I simply replied. He nodded and began walking towards the little farm house. Harry and I followed, hand in hand.
