I woke up in a hospital room and I was woozy. I tried to sit up but my sides hurt way too much for that. I looked around and everyone was in my room. I looked over to see mom in a chair, Nick sitting next to her. Matthew and Eve were sitting by the window, both sleeping. The twins weren't here and Dad was sitting by Matthew. Nathaniel was leaning against the wall on my bed. I tried to move again but I couldn't.
"Mom?" Everyone looked up at once, even Matthew and Eve. Mom stood up and sat on the edge of my bed like I did for her. She pushed my hair back and smiled.
"Hey you. How are you feeling, baby?" She asked. I smiled a little. She asked me the same question right before she told me James died for months ago.
"My sides hurt." I answered. She nodded. I looked at Nathaniel and he smiled at me. I could see worry on his face.
"Thank you, Nathaniel. Really, thank you." I said. He just shook his head.
"For what?" He asked.
"You saved her life, son." Dad answered. "If you hadn't come in when you did, he would have killed her." Mom looked at him and smiled. So did I."
"He saved yours too, dad." He just brushed it off. I knew he would. He was worried more about me than anything else, including his own life. I looked at Matthew and I saw the tears in his eyes. He came over and took my hand from mom.
"You really scared me. If I hadn't called when I did..." He couldn't continue. He just started crying.
"Matthew I am glad you did. It gave me a reason to get away."
"I was getting so mad that you weren't home. " He said and I laughed. I knew what he thought and I wish it was the reason I didn't pick up the phone.
"It's okay, Matthew." I said. He squeezed my hand and went back to sit down. Then my doctor came in. He looked at me and smiled.
"You're finally awake. How are you feeling?" He asked. I thought about it for a minute.
"I am very sore, doctor. My whole body hurts."
"Do you remember what happened?" He asked. I nodded as mom looked at me and I could tell she hoped I hadn't.
"Yeah, Kevin Brody came and broken into my house after Eve had left to get my two brothers from school and wait for me to come home. Then started beating me basically. He knocked me into a door, my easel which broke and cut my arm, threw me into a wall, where a big painting fell on top of and he kicked my side repeatly before stabbing me twice, once in the leg and once in my shoulder and stabbing my father. Oh and he punched me in the face." I answered. The doctor nodded as he wrote something on my chart and looked up at me.
"Okay, Miss Ames. This is what happened, you have four broken ribs, that's the pain in your side, you also lost a lot of blood, so we did a blood transfusion. You also dislocated your shoulder. You needed over a hundred stitches on your arms, head, neck and back. Plus the stab wounds. You didn't have a concussion but we do want to keep you here for two more days at least so we can keep an eye on you. Just to be sure." He explained.
"Okay, thank you." He smiled and left. I was surprised by the stitches. Over a hundred? That was a lot. Mom was crying and Nick held her hand as dad just watched. There was a knock on the door. Dad stood up and I saw his arm was in a sling. He smiled as he walked over to the door. The boys ran in, looking scared. Then a lady I've never seen before walked in with a baby. I was guessing my step-mother and baby brother. She looked very nervous coming in my room.
"Hey mommy is Lori feeling better?" Cade asked. She smiled and pointed at me.
"Ask her yourselves. Just be very gentle. She's broken again." She answered. They looked at me and got so happy.
