I was suddenly awaken by a loud bang. I jolted up from my bed and then realized that it was just another gun shot. It definitely wasn't rare to hear gun shots in this town, usually every night around 2:30 the loud obnoxious noises went off every hour or so until the sun came up.
I groaned as I looked over at my alarm clock that was placed beside my bed. Just as expected, it was just past 3am.
"Fuck." I mumbled as the loud bangs continued to go off. Knowing that I wasn't going to get any sleep for a while I climbed out of bed and made my way towards my small kitchen. I poured myself a glass of water and rested against the counter
taking large sips of the refreshing cold water. I sighed and walked over to the living room and plopped down on the old couch. I turned on the television and the news was on.I hate the news.
I changed the channel quickly and settled for The Simpsons. I grabbed a blanket and got comfortable, another gunshot went off and I squeezed my eyes shut tightly and sunk into the couch even further.
Why do I live in this terrifying neighbourhood you ask? Well, I moved out of my parents house thinking I was all grown up and responsible and shit, I jumped to the first little apartment I looked at bought it. But how can any 18 year old that has permission to move out not take the opportunity and just leave? Especially since my parents treated me like I was 8 years old or something. I love them to death but I couldn't take it any longer so once I graduated, I packed my bags and moved out.
I did manage to get something good out of living here though. My boyfriend Ryan lives about 5 minutes away from my apartment building. We've been dating for about 6 months now and things have been great. We met at the drug store, I was picking up tampons and cookies and he was getting gum.
How romantic right.
I was pulled out of my train of thought when my phone started ringing.
"Hello?" I mumbled into the phone, not wanting to talk to anyone at all.
"Hey babe, I heard the gunshots. Everything okay over there?" Ryan asked sounding concerned. I rolled my eyes and a small smile made its way onto my face. "Yes, I'm fine," I smiled. I heard shuffling on the other end of the phone and a small groan. I furrowed my eyebrows and bit my lip. "Ryan?" I asked and then the call ended. I took the phone away from my face and shrugged my shoulders. I don't know what that boy is up to but whatever it is, it's probably isn't important.
My phone buzzed and a text message from Ryan appeared;
"sorry babe, I dropped something and had to pick it up... Call you in the morning?"
I quickly replied, "it's fine :) I'll call you later."
I put my phone down and reverted my attention towards the television. After a few minutes of staring at the screen I slowly began to drift off into a deep sleep.
----
When I woke up I brushed my hair and my teeth and threw on some shorts, a tank top and a yellow knit cardigan. Not really caring about my appearance for the day I walked out of the bathroom and made my way to the kitchen to make myself a big bowl of cereal.
As I was eating, my phone buzzed and a text from my friend Bella appeared.
"ROSE!!! MEET ME AT THE CAFE ON MAIN STREET ASAP!"
I furrowed my eyebrows having no idea why she was freaking out and wanting to meet me so suddenly. Knowing her she probably met a hot guy and had to tell me about him or something.
I put my bowl in the sink and made my way out the door. As I was walking towards the cafe, I noticed a long line of black cars drive by. All very nice cars too, Range rovers, Mercedes, and other fancy cars that I didn't really recognize. I stared at them as they drove by and wondered where they were going to. My curiosity was eating me alive, so I decided to follow them.
They made a turn down a small road, driving towards and older looking building. I quickly scurried towards a dumpster as I hid behind it and peeked from the side, trying to see what was going on.
The cars stopped in front of the building and about 8 tall muscular men hopped out of all the cars. They opened the trunks of all 5 cars and all I could see was big boxes in the back.
"Grab as many as you can and put them in the room," I heard a man say. The men took the boxes out from the trunk and walked towards old the building.
That's when I saw him.
A mop of curly brown hair on top of his head with the front pushed up. He was fairly tall and had tattoos going up his neck and stopped just before his jawline, and I'm guessing he has many more all over his body. He was wearing sunglasses so it was difficult to make out his facial features properly but I could tell he was attractive just from a quick glance. He held a phone up to his ear as he angrily spoke into it.
"I said to have the god damn orders in by today, and now you're telling me that it's going to be another week?!" He yelled into the phone.
He had a deep, raspy british accent. You don't hear many of those in america so it took me by surprise when he spoke. Still eavesdropping on the mans conversation, the worst possible thing happened. I moved over the slightest bit and stumbled a bit, knocking over a stack of wood planks. My eyes shot open as I heard him yell "Who's there?"
I could hear the gravel crunching from underneath his shoes, getting closer and closer. I shot up from my spot and ran as fast as I could towards the main street. Not looking back, I turned the corner and I could hear him yelling for me to come back. I just kept running until I came across a small alleyway and I quickly made my way behind another dumpster and hid there. I stayed there for a few minutes and after seeing that he wasn't actually coming after me, I raised from my little spot and peeked around the corner.
There was no sign of any sexy man.
I sighed in relief and continued to walk towards the small cafe. But all I could think about was that man. Why was he so angry about orders being late? What were in all of those boxes that the men were carrying in?
When I entered the cafe, Bella was sitting there anxiously tapping her foot on the ground as she sat there with two coffees in front of her. I walked towards her and when she noticed my presence she instantly stood up and smiled.
"Took you long enough to get here!" She said hugging me and then sitting down. "Yeah I got a bit sidetracked...But I'm here now. So, what is it you had to oh so desperately tell me?" I said taking a sip of the warm coffee. Just as I thought, she told me a very long story about a guy she met at a bar last night. Just what I thought.
As she was telling me her story, my mind kept drifting off to that man. For some strange reason I just wanted to know so badly what exactly they were up to.
And I was going to find out if it killed me.
