Chapter: 3

Flashback

I was only six years-old. My father was driving me and my mother to California, to visit some family members. We stopped at what seemed like a really desserted gas station in the middle of the dessert.

My mother took me inside a little convinent store, just to the right of the gas station, it looked really rundown. No one was inside, but the store clerk, at the register, smoking. My mother simply grabbed a bottle of water and placed it on the counter. I was looking around when I noticed a small glass doll, at the other end of the store. Small blonde curls to her shoulders, green glass eyes, victorian pink dress and bows. She was the most beautifulest doll I had ever seen.

"Mommy, look at that pretty doll, isn't she pretty?" I pulled my mother's hand as she was paying, and with the other I pointed at the doll. "Yes, honey, very pretty", she said, counting her change, not even glancing over at the doll.

I began to tug at my mother's hand, "Mommy, can I have it?" I grew impatient, not seeing it in my arms, I had to have it. She took her reciept, and pulled my hand as she was about to walk out the sliding glass doors.

"I'm sorry, hun, but we're about to leave."

"Please! She's so pretty! Please!", I pulled my hand out of hers, crossed my arms, and began to stomp my feet in front of the check-out desk. The cashier just enjoyed the show, well, he looked pretty amused with my little tantrum.

"Esther, NO, come now, your father's waiting!" She stood before me, extending her arm out, waiting for my hand to be placed on hers.

I felt something strange that day, deep inside, not just in my gut, but deeper. It was like pure anger and determination. I wanted to show her that I needed this, and I will get it. I stood there, arms dropped to my side, my eyes burning into hers. I was pissed, and as a child, there was only one way to show it.

My eyes began to grow watery, as I slowly opened my mouth. I searched for the trapped fire deep inside, it needed to grow brighter, stronger, as it was about to be let go. Once, I opened my mouth as large as I could, I closed my eyes and let my anger out in the loudest scream I could possibly make. Scream after scream came.

I slowly opened my eyes, not aware of what I was about to set them on. The entire back store, covered in thick crystal like ice. The cashier was ducked under the table, my mother crouched down with her arms over her head. I just stood there, mouth hanging wide open in shock, just staring at the horrifying beauty in it all. That was insanely awesome.

'Could I have done this? No, that's impossible!' I wasn't that much of a stupid child, I've seen the superhero movies, and that topic was the first thing to enter my small mind. I remember watching heroes have some kind of light, beam out from the palm of their hand. That was considered 'powers'.

As childish as it sounds (well, I actually was a child), I lifted and extended my left arm out in front of me. I began to research the fire deep within me, and screamed again. Not closing my eyes this time, I witnessed a white, with the hint of purple, beam shoot out from the palm of my hand hit a stand of chocolate bars.

'Oh my gosh! I can't believe it! I have powers like the people in the movies!'

I remember telling myself.

I turned back to the cashier, who peaked his head up from under the table, and my mother, who stood up and stared at the crazy mess, wide-eyed. "Come, honey, NOW! We need to go!" She forcefully took my hand, I'm pretty sure I caught a glance of fear in her eyes, and began pulling me out of the store. I can tell she was confused, had not a hint in the world of what was just seen. I don't blame her, niether did I.

Before leaving, she turned back to the cashier, still hiding, and spoke, "I-I'm so sorry! For t-this... I...I don't know." She turned away and rushed to the car, dragging me with her. Father was waiting in it, from the expression on his face, it was obvious, he saw it all. Mother helped me in and with the seatbelt, then rushed into the passenger seat. Her and father exchanged glances, before he started the car, he said, "We need to go home now, and find out what in God's name just happened."

We did end up driving all the way back home, it was a long way. They decided not to tell anyone, because they don't want the government to get all touchy touchy with me as if I was an alien or some mutant, which I'm clearly not. We never found out what and why I have these 'powers', but I just accepted it as a gift or fate. Plus, I had to agree, they were pretty damn awesome. I would practice with it in my backyard. It doesn't only have to require anger, but strong energy within, but each time I tried using and taming it, the backyard would end up in hard cold ice. We try not to ever bring the subject up...
