Ivy's POV
I comb my hair, staring at myself in the mirror in front of me. My brown hair cascades down my shoulders and eventually stops just below my chest. I couldn't sleep, so I ended up waking up at 5:00am and then decided it was probably best to just start getting ready for school. Today is actually my first day back to school in Tulsa. Any other normal girl―to put it into better terms, any normal Soc girl―would be waking up at this time, bright and early, prepared to look her best for the first day of school fashion show. The difference with me was that I just didn't care. I was currently dressed in a dark orange cardigan with a sickly yellow color along the sides that had been a hand-me-down from my older sister, Dawn, and a military green tank top. For pants, I decided on simple light blue skinny jeans. I paired this with the black Vans shoes that Mom bought me for Christmas last year. I knew she had spent an awful lot of money to buy me those, and I was grateful, yet at the same time I was almost positive that I would wear them out within a few weeks, so I tried to wear them only when I felt it was best, which had only been a couple of times. I guess since I'll be wearing them today that could be considered dressing up? It is for me, anyways. My hair is straight, seeing as I had enough time to do it, and I figured it would probably look better this way, anyways. I apply a bit of chapstick to my lips and check the time. It was currently 6:30am, Brian would be waking up soon. Brian is my brother. Being twelve, he's the youngest in our family. He has dirty blond hair and pale blue eyes. He's also pretty short for his age, but still handsome, like Dad. He's always getting everybody to laugh, too. I'm the middle out of us. I'm fifteen, soon to be sixteen. Dawn's the oldest, she's twenty-one. She has short hair with different shades of blond and brown and it stops at her shoulders. My deep brown eyes are nothing compared to her sparking grey orbs. I've always been jealous of Dawn. To me, she's one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. But since she got married back when we lived in Ohio―and let me tell you, if you thought she was gorgeous when she wasn't all dolled up, you should've seen her in that wedding dress―we haven't seen her. Mom made the decision to move us all back to Tulsa. When Dawn and I were younger we lived here, we even grew up here. But, when Mom became pregnant with Brian and Dad left us, we moved to Columbus, Ohio. Mom didn't like Columbus much, but we had family who lived over there and Mom wanted to be someplace where she wasn't alone, even if she did have us. Mom actually wanted to ask Dawn if she wanted to come with us back to Tulsa, but she had a husband now and couldn't just drop everything and leave. So it was just Mom, Brian and I. I suddenly hear a yawn and I look to find Brian heading towards me. "Goodmorning, Vy!" He smiles softly and I pat him on the head. "Gee, you're sure up early, huh? Can't get you out of bed any other day...you excited for school or something? You're never excited for school any other time! Did you meet a boy already? Is he good-looking? Better than m-" I place my hand over his mouth and shake my head, laughing. "No, no. No boys. I just couldn't sleep." I smile at him. "You sure look nice," he smirks. "You sure about those boys? Mom won't be happy-" He's cut off again, but not by me this time. "I won't be happy about what? What's going on?" I hear Mom ask sleepily. "Nothing, Mom. Brian here is just rambling again." I grin. I look over to him to see that his expression has changed. "Hey now, I was not rambling! I was asking you a question!" He looks at me with mock hurt. "Okay, whatever you saaay." I sing, giggling. "Alright, get ready for school, Bri." Mom says, laughing softly. "I'm going to drop off your sister and then we'll be right back to get you to school, okay?" she asks. "Okay, I'll see you after school, Sissy." I hug him and ruffle his hair up a bit. "Okay, bedhead. See you later."

I made my way to the office to pick up my schedule. Mom had figured I was old enough to do this alone and for the first time in my life she let me go inside of a school―on the first day, no less―to get things situated. I couldn't be happier. That is, until I saw the line I would have to stand in to retrieve my schedule. When I finally made it to the front of the line well, you could say I was relieved. "Name?" The woman at the front desk asked me politely when I finally got inside. "Ivy Lamore." I told her, and stood there watching as she dug through the envelopes containing the schedules for the other students in my grade. "Here you go," A smile flashed across her face and she handed me the envelope with my name written on it in capital letters. "Thank you." I return her smile and make my way outside of the line to see which classes I'll be taking.

Not too bad. I would have to worry about gym later, anyways. The classes didn't seem too far apart, so that was good. I suppose I could navigate without a problem. "Hey," I hear a voice behind me and turn around to see a girl about my age with blond hair and captivating emerald eyes. Her beauty instantly reminded me of Dawn. I smile at her politely. "Hi." I reply simply. "I'm new here...and you seemed nice enough. I was wondering if you could show me around, maybe?" she smiles, and I instantly frown. "I'd love to help you, but I'm new here, too. I guess we could compare timetables and help each other out though, if you'd like." I suggest. She smiles widely. "That sounds great! Here, lemme' see your schedule. I'm Elise by the way, everyone back home called me El, though." I nod and hand her my timetable and we huddle together to see which classes we might have together. "I'm Ivy," I say. "Oh my God!" She looks at me with wide eyes. "W-What?" I ask worriedly. "Two accelerated classes?! You're a smart cookie, ain'tcha'?" I blush, looking at my shoes suddenly. "I guess so..." I mumble. "Well, look. We have third period and sixth period together!" she exclaims. "That's good, what's your locker number?" I ask, looking up at her with a smile. "146." she replies. "You're lying!" I accuse, staring at her blankly. "What? No! I'm serious!" she giggles. "Why, what's the deal?" she asks. "I have locker 145!" I grin and she pulls me into an embrace. "Oh, Ivy! We're going to be the greatest friends there ever was! Let's get to our lockers!"

After El and I found our way to our lockers we both went through the first couple of periods with ease. Well, at least I did. Finally, we find ourselves in third period, one of the two periods that we have together. I have to say, Mrs. Hall doesn't seem like my kind of teacher so far. She had already made assigned seats for our class, and I had to say, I was a bit nervous about who I was going to sit by. My class was filled with Socs, and I didn't particularly want to have to sit by one of them. I wasn't a greaser. I suppose I'm one of the middle class kids, seeing as I was never classified as a Soc or a greaser. I had to say, if I were to pick a side though, it would be the greasers, no doubt. Socs were stuck up, and they acted like the greasers had some sort of disease or something. "Ivy Lamore...you'll be sitting there," Mrs. Hall points to a seat in the back of the classroom and I see El's eyes flicker to me. She appears to be...crossing her fingers? We won't get that lucky. I take my seat. "Johnny Cade, you'll be next to her." I watch as the most gorgeous boy I've ever seen―and will probably ever see―takes his seat next to me. I look over to see El pouting and it takes everything in me not to giggle at the face she's making. Now, back to Johnny Cade...his lips could only be described as 'kissable,' and his eyes seemed to pull me in, and I couldn't get enough of it. "Hi," I smile at him and he looks down at the notebook in his hands. I immediately feel a Pang! within my chest. He was ignoring me, and he had no reason to! I just look down at my binder, biting my lip. After listening to Mrs. Hall rant on and on about how she didn't want any trouble this year, I feel courgeous enough to look at Johnny again. I then realize that he's clearly a greaser. Not that it mattered, but it was just something to think about, I suppose. His eyes make contact with mine once more and he stares at me blankly. I couldn't tell what was going through his mind, but I wish I knew. Suddenly, his lips are moving. It takes me a moment to process what he says. "You want somethin'?..." I look back down at my binder quickly. "Uh, n-no. I just wanted to say...hi." he nods. Out of the corners of my eyes I see him turn his head back towards the front of the class, focusing on Mrs. Hall. I wondered if he could hear my heart beating. It wouldn't be too hard with the way he made me feel. Well, it was a crush, sure. I didn't know how long it would last, but he didn't really seem to have any interest in me at all. I guess that was okay...okay, it really wasn't.
