Elsa slowly opened her eyes, as though exhausted from struggling against Pitch. She gave a tired smile, "I'm sorry too...for ever doubting you..." Elsa stayed in Jack's arms, and they were content to stay like that, even if for only a moment. Pitch stood not far away from them, his expression murderous. Slowly, he picked up a still-intact ice arrow lying on the ground. The arrow's core turned black at Pitch's touch, making it a deadly weapon, consisting of Jack's element (ice) as well as the fear and despair that Pitch infused into the arrow. Black sand swirled and a bow formed. He put the arrow in the bow and arched the arrow at Jack's back, getting ready to shoot. Elsa saw what Pitch was going to do and her eyes widened in alarm, "Jack..." Jack turned around to look what happened. At that, Pitch released the arrow, aimed straight for Jack's heart. The arrow flew through the air, the string on the bow still zinging. In that split second, everything slowed down. Hans, who had been standing off to the side all the time during the fight, suddenly picked up the discarded ice shield on the floor and leaped to in front of Jack, his eyes flashing with determination. A memory flashed in his eyes.

Hans was tucked in bed and his mother sat beside him. "Hans, my dear... I'll be leaving tomorrow for a long trip..." Hans' mother tucked a strand of hair behind Hans' ear and smiled sadly. She caressed his cheek, continuing, "I won't be back for a long time...but don't worry, I'll come back for you...Be good while I'm gone, okay?" Hans nodded, his green eyes intent. Han's mother smiled, "I believe you will make me proud..." Hans nodded again, "I promise."

This was what made Hans jump between Jack and the deadly arrow. He had promised his mother he would make her proud and it was as if he suddenly realized that he couldn't let another person get hurt because of him. It was the only thing he could do at this point to make up for all that he had done. Hans was just in time, the arrow hit the shield, saving Jack from the blow. However, the arrow bounced back from the shield and headed straight back to Pitch. Pitch was surprised and didn't have time to act and before he knew it, the arrow had hit him straight in the heart. Instantly, Pitch disappeared in a cloud of black mist, his anguished cry ringing out in the room. The impact of the arrow had knocked the ice shield against Hans forcefully and he now lay on the floor, breathing heavily.
