10:27pm...

“April? Aaaaapril? April?”

“Wake up!”

April jumped up in alert, clutching her baseball bat. “What!? Who—who's there?”

Erma rubbed her bum. “It was just me. . .”

“Erma!” April called out in exasperation, sinking into the mattress. “How many times have I told you not to do that?”

“Sorry. But. . . I think someone's out there.”

The exotic pink curtains swooshed slightly through the open window, moonlight filtering from outside the balcony.

“I'm sure it's just a squirrel. ”

Erma protests. “It's not! You say that all the time!”

“Ok look,” April began, her voice low and calm. “Ignore. . .whatever you think it is, and go back to sleep. I'm tired.”

“April. . .please?

“No.”

“Pretty please?”

“No.”

“I can go on for hours you know.”
April sighed. “Ok—” Erma squealed. “But if I don't see anything, you're taking out the trash.”

Stepping back from the cluttered bed and closing her eyes, half-hoping that if she wish hard enough, the squirrel might magically disappear in a poof of smoke.

Like in Wizard of Oz.

Unexpectedly, a boy was on the balcony, bent over a canister of mutagen that he held between his thighs, glowing brightly throughout the atmosphere, spotlighting him.

He was tall, about four feet ten. He was wearing blue jeans and a lab coat that covered his broad shoulders.

His eyes were lowered as he looked down at the canister; a high forehead wrinkled in concentration, his brown hair dark as his eyes.

Don't just stand there you idiot! Her mind bickered, take the fool hostage for breaking in your home!

But April couldn't move. Her feet glued on the spot.

And slightly, oh ever so slightly, the boy turned his head to look at her. He blinked, and since everything in her body seemed to have stopped, she could feel the movement those lashes caused.

When he turned and saw her, his smirk only showed as if accomplished something.

She doesn't know when, or how, but she was closer to him. A throbbing sensation that made her heart pace accelerated as she found herself inches before the boy she never met, and, seeing from the angle of his head, his intention was to kiss her.

Long fingers traced along her face, tipping her face up. So his lips could settle, warm and strong on hers.

Without another word, he wished farewell, stole one last glance, then took off down the street.

Who was he? She had no idea. Yet, a strong connection drew her towards him, as if knowing the boy her entire life. But it couldn't be, it was obviously, reluctantly-

Impossible.

Dazed, April found out that something was out there after all.

And for calling it a day, O'Neil turned on her heels to walk inside, only to see a stunned friend.

Erma blinked. “OH HELL NAW! ”
