I sat at the top of the hill in the middle of my dad's grassy field. The wind blew my long, wavy, blonde hair behind me. My forest green eyes studied the land below me it had tall green grass all over and it smelled like horses and hay.
A nicker sounded behind me and my horse Lars nuzzled my shoulder signalling me to get up.
"Alright boy I'm coming." I heaved myself off the dusty earth and dusted my dark jeans off. I straitened my blue plaid shirt and put my old boots in the stirrup. I grabbed the reins and some of the mane in one hand and the back of the saddle in another. I pulled myself into the saddle and relaxed.
I took a deep breath of fresh air and I made a clucking sound with my mouth to get Lars to start walking. We walked down the front of the hill and once we got to the bottom of the hill I eased Lars into a trot. We trotted about a mile until I convinced Lars to get loping. We came to a fence and Lars easily jumped over it. We advanced towards home steadily. Lars and I were one, we moved together perfectly. I loved being on the back of a horse, that is where I felt the most safe.
I arrived at home to see a strange truck and trailer parked in my yard. I hopped off Lars and led him into the barn. A man was in the barn stroking a horse named Corny when I walked in the man turned to me. The man had dark brown eyes, tan skin, brown hair and a dazzling smile.
"Hello. I am Tom Martin." The man said before he stepped forward and held out his hand waiting for it to be shaked.
"Carmen Tanner." I replied while shaking Tom's hand. "What are you doing here?" I asked as nice as possible.
"Oh yes I forgot I am sorry. I work for the ranch and horse inspection corporation and I am here to inspect your farm." Tom explained to me.
"Okay just let me untack and I will show you around." Before I could hear an answer I walked Lars down the aisle towards his stall.
I lead Lars into his stall and immediately took his bridle off and replaced it by Lars' halter. I undid the sinch and pulled the saddle off of Lars. I turned around and Tom was standing right there. I jumped and dropped the saddle on the ground.
"Please don't scare me like that." I told Tom while picking up the saddle.
I walked away and put Lars' saddle on its rack. I grabbed a brush and walked back to the stall. I started brushing Lars all over carefully. Once I got all of the dirt out of Lars' beautiful cherry bay coat I took off his halter and stepped out of his stall.
"So I am guessing this is the barn." Tom said while pulling a pen and pad out of his jacket pocket.
"Yes it is" I said earning a grunt from Tom while he wrote something down on the pad.
"Are you going to show me around?"
"Oh yes"

"Well thanks for the tour Carmen." Tom said before he drove away in his truck.
I walked up to my family's log house and opened the squeaky wood door. I stepped inside my house and was immediately surrounded by the smell of chicken wings and homemade fries. I took my boots off before walking into the kitchen. I saw my Mom running around getting everything ready for supper.
"Hi Mom" I said to get her attention.
"Oh hi honey" My Mom replied and kissed the top of my head.
"Where is Dad?" I asked quite mad.
"In town. Why?"
"Because a guy was here to inspect the ranch."
"Oh honey I am so sorry I didn't know. I have been so busy I didn't even see his truck."
"Whatever. It's not like it matters anyway." I grumbled before storming out of the kitchen and into my room.
My Mom's name is Samantha Louise but everyone just calls her Lou. My auntie Amy taught me everything I know about horses. My uncle Ty is my best friend he and I do everything together. My Dad's name is Peter Walter but everyone just calls him Peter. He owns an oil company. Everyone says I look like my Auntie Amy.
I closed my bedroom door and sat on my bed. I grabbed my phone and started texting my best friend Riley.
R=Riley C=Carmen
C- Hey
R- What's up
C- Nothing. What about you
R- Oh just my dad working late
C- I am so sorry about your dad
R- Eh! It's his life
C- So are you still coming over tomorrow?
R- Of course. Are you crazy?
C- I don't think so
R- What.
C- I am not crazy
R- Oh. Anyways I have to go bye
C- Bye
I turned off my phone and walked to the bathroom. I locked the door and hopped in the shower. I quickly showered and got out of the shower. I wrapped the towel around myself and ran into my room. I pulled on my pjs and turned off the lights in my bedroom. I slipped into my bed and cuddled under the sheets I quickly fell into a deep sleep. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
