Chapter 12: Countertop claim

The silence after his declaration was absolute, a vacuum where the only sound was the faint clatter of silverware Alice had been polishing falling onto the stainless-steel counter. His hands were still on her wrists, his grip warm and possessive. His dark eyes held hers, the volcanic intensity she'd been cultivating for three weeks now focused into a single, devastating point of intent.

"Over?" she breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Finished," he corrected, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her bones. "Your campaign of seduction. My patience. The waiting." He leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "It ends now. Here."

She glanced around. They were at the wait station, a long, utilitarian counter at the back of the dining room where servers polished glasses and sorted cutlery. It was mostly shielded from the main floor by a half-wall and a service curtain, but not entirely private. The bistro was empty, pre-dinner, but Frank was in the office. Gareth and his wife were gone, a memory. But anyone could walk in. The risk was palpable, a live wire in the air.

"Heath, we can't—" she started, a protest born of habit.

He didn't listen. He moved. With a swift, powerful motion, he turned her fully, pressing her back against the edge of the counter. Then his hands went to her hips, lifting her. She wasn't heavy, but the strength in his arms, the effortless ease with which he hoisted her up, made her gasp. Her buttocks landed on the cool stainless-steel surface, her legs dangling over the edge. He was between them instantly, his body crowding her against the counter, trapping her there.

"We can," he said, his voice final. "You started this. You whispered. You sent pictures. You begged in a video. You teased me for weeks. Now you get the consequence."

His hands slid up her thighs, under her skirt. The rough cotton of her server apron was pushed aside, the fabric of her uniform skirt a thin barrier. His palms were hot against her skin, moving higher, pushing the skirt up until it bunched around her waist. He didn't remove it. He left it there, a rumpled mess, exposing her legs, her hips, the plain black underwear she'd chosen today—a deliberate, boring choice meant to torment him further.

He looked at it, his lips curling in a dark, appreciative smile. "Even this," he murmured, his fingers hooking into the sides of the underwear. "A quiet rebellion. You thought it would deny me." He leaned closer, his nose almost touching the fabric. "It just makes me want to ruin it."

And he did. With a sharp, decisive tug, he ripped the cotton. The sound was a small, violent tear in the quiet room. The fabric gave way, splitting at the seams. He pulled it away from her body, tossing the ruined scrap onto the floor beside the fallen cutlery.

She was exposed, bare on the cold steel counter, her legs spread around his hips. The vulnerability was shocking, exhilarating. The cool air of the bistro kissed her inner thighs, her most intimate skin. She could feel the hard edge of the counter pressing into the backs of her thighs. She could see the dining room through the gap in the curtain—empty tables, silent chairs. The public possibility sent a thrill of terror and desire straight to her core.
