"Will, can you get it done by 6? It's getting late," I mumble. We'd been discussing about how this plan was going to kick off. I was honestly afraid, not for me but for these people who have decided to be a part of my life. Risky. Dangerous. Life-threatening. Merciless. They were brave enough for me.
"Yeah, let's just see how big this drive is first. Ok... this might take a while. It's very big and there are, many videos. Shit, Sophie Young. Your dad did this? That's sick", he mutters, as he clicks on it.
"Bad idea! Don't!" I shout from where I'm standing but it's too late. 8 eyeballs now focused on the horrid scene rolling itself into their thoughts. There we can see men laughing, drinking and raping an innocent girl. She was crying hysterically barely being heard. She was crying for help. She was tortured, hit with glass bottles. She was bleeding all over and all they did was laugh and hit her. They slapped her, hard, you could see bruises forming all over her. Her eyes, swollen, stared at the person videotaping it. I knew in an instant it was my mom as I heard the sob behind the camera. My mom was telling the truth.
"I need to throw up," Will said, getting up, going to the closest waste basket.
"Enough. We've seen enough", Devon said and closes up the video. He turns away, clearly mortified and I'm not only ashamed that my father was one of them, I was embarrassed and scared that I actually called him my father. The one I wished was alive all this while. I now wished that was the only wish that didn't come true. This was sick. I walk to the window, trying to keep my tears at bay. I feel a hand move to my waist. He holds me close to him and gives me hope. "You have me, I won't let anything happen to you. I promise", he whispers and kisses the back of my neck.
"I always thought my father was the only parent that actually cared about me, I was wrong. My mother. The one I've been angry with all my life has been the only one! I'm ashamed I ever said I loved him. What if I turn out as sick as he is?" I cry, wiping my tear with the back of my hand. I didn't care how bad I looked right now.
"Look, Brady, I may not have expected that of your parents, but you were so young. You wouldn't have known. Hey, look at me," he said, as I turned around to face him. "You will never become your father, I promise you. I love you", he whispers to me. We look into each other's eyes before interlocking our lips. With our fingers intertwined, he brings them up to my neck and I am gifted with his warm lips clashing with my cold, wet lips from all the crying.
"I love you, too", I reply in his mouth.
"Guys, now may be a lovey-dovey session for the both of you but as you can recall, we are on a mission to save someone from a bunch of merciless apes", Deb said, from the corner. Arms crossed, eyes darted towards the both of us, I blush beet-red aware Will has been watching too. I clear my throat, obviously sensing the awkwardness surrounding the room like air. "Sorry um... right... let's get it on a roll", I said, clasping my hands together. I grab Dev's bruised knuckle and watch him hiss at the pressure I was putting on it. "Sorry", I mutter and I bring his knuckles to my lips as I try to kiss the bruises away. He smirks as I do it and I can tell he's enjoying the attention I was giving him.
"Guys oh my goodness, quit it and get your asses here. Jesus," Will groans as he's eyes divert from the wastebasket to us then to the laptop as he rubs his temples.
"Alright man, chill out a bit", Dev said, putting his arm around my shoulder. I bring him to the couch where we sit and discuss more.
"Deb, have you ever seen what was on the drive? Or have you totally kept your word and not once ever checked it out", I asked, curious as ever.
"Kept my word, sealed. Your mom told me to never open it. Until a day like this came", she answered. I wondered how they knew about Deb.
"They came to your house earlier right? How did they know you were my friend?" I asked once more. My brain was now registering the incidents which took place earlier. Questions were flooding in, one after another.
"They have been keeping a close eye on you and all of your friends. Why do you think I always ask you where you're headed or whether or not I can crash at your place? I know they have been keeping a close eye on you. When those random fuckers came by I knew instantaneously who were after you," she said, getting up to clear the empty cups.
"Are they going to hurt Luke and the rest?" I asked, worried. Dev gave me a quick thigh squeeze assuring me that all's well. I just couldn't help but worry of bringing in more people. I didn't want any more people to get hurt. Just then, I remember Frank and Georgie. They must have gone there, shit, they most probably have been there to ask them about me. Oh no. This is bad.
"They won't hurt them, but they will demand for more answers", she answered.
"Oh no, Frank and Georgie", I mutter to myself. I stand up and try to steady myself as different scenarios play in my head. Could they have done something to them? What if they hurt them too. Fuck.
"Call them. Now," She insists. I dig in my bag to search for my hand phone and once I have it I dial the numbers straight, fearing the worst.
It goes straight to voicemail and my hand starts to wobble as I dial again. It goes straight voicemail once more. This was normal, but at a time like this, anything and everything wasn't normal.
"We need to go back to my house. We need to check please", I cried. Not more people please. Please, please, please be alright.
Everyone starts to stand to gather their things and we are jolted back by the sudden ring of my phone. I pick up thinking its Frank or Georgie. "Frank? Georgie? Is that you? Are you guys alright?" I asked immediately.
"Why hello there Emily", A cold voice on the other end sends prickles down my spine and my blood runs cold and still. Everything around me stops. It was as if time had stopped in place. The bile in me was rising.
"What have you done? Who the hell are you?" I question back with the same cold voice the man on the other end had used, surprising myself as much as it clearly surprised the other person on the line. Devon creases his eyebrows together, worried as I am. I see his clenched fists turn white. Everyone stops doing what they're doing.
"I've not done anything. Yet, my dear. Who the hell am I?" he chuckles. "I'm the very one that helped the bitch bring you into this world. It's your father, Emily. Miss me?"
