RAJ
Things have changed between Lilac and I ever since I got into that with Luke; we've gotten closer. At first, she was kind of angry and really scared to be around me because of that psycho Saline, but I got a restraining order against her so she can't come within 100 feet Lilac or me. After I told her that, she warmed up to me and things have been going smoothly. We're always partners at academic decathlon practice and we' ve been seeing each other out of school like going to the movies, out to dinner all of which were as a group that included Jessie, Kendol, Kim Soo, and Madison, but still, Lilac sits by me. And today I get to be with her alone! She's supposed to be coming to the library today to work on our human relations project. I see her come in. Ah she looks plain to the average eye, but I recognize her natural beauty.
"Sup Raj! Ready to get cracking on this paper?"
"Let's do it."
"Ok since race is a major factor in human relations and America is the melting pot, I was thinking we could write about the different races mixing. What are your views on interracial marriage?"
Oh crap. Should I speak from what I was taught or from what I feel now?
"Uh... You sure seem to have a lot to say."
"Well yeah of course. Growing up black I was divided into dark and light within my own race. Going outside of it got double takes. Even though it's becoming more and more common and that we'd like to say we're color blind, interracial dating is still not accepted as the norm. And the product of that are biracial and mixed race babies. I think it's really beautiful, but at the same time, you lose traits unique to each race. But it's not complicated at all, they're a combination of so and so race. There should be no having to prove you're more of one than the other just to fit in."
I'm speechless. There's silence for a good thirty seconds as the things she said sank in until I got curious about something.
"Lilac would you date outside of your race?" I leaned in and asked putting emphasis on the 'you'.
"Yes. Love has no color."
I leaned in closer.
"Would you date a clumsy, nerdish Indian guy named Raj?"
She looked shocked. I knew I shouldn't have asked her. Keep your feelings at bay man! I continued beating myself up on the inside until I felt the heat of her close to my face.
"Yes."
My eyes widened and A great sense of relief rushed all over my body as if a great weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Our faces were still very close to each other, so I slowly close the gap until our lips softly meet. Today is the best day ever!
LUKE
Ever since that fight, Lilac hasn't spoken a word to me. This is the worst breakup I've ever had, the only breakup I've ever had where I didn't end it first. And she looks happier now too, hanging out with her crew and that Indian guy. What's his name? Raj?
"Luke! Get your head out of your ass and shoot the damn ball!"
Coach is livid at me. These past few months I've lost all coordination and remote ability to shoot. Ball isn't life. Bench is life.
"Luke come here son." Coach calls me over. "Now look I've been watching you lately and i know you're better than that. You can't throw your basketball career down the drain just because of a girl. I know love sickness when I see it. Spring break is coming up, just win her back."
"But how?"
"No son of mine has ever had problems in that department. How do you think you got here?"
"Ok dad. I'll think of something."
"Atta boy! Now be sure to introduce her to me. This girl must be special to make a McLauren man change his ways."
That she is. I hit the showers and head to the library to get some romance novels for ideas. I'm looking through the shelf when I see a couple kissing through a slight opening in the books. Pft too much pda. But i keep looking because the girl's hair kinda reminds me of Lilac's. And her glasses. And her shoes. And the purse she always carries. I press up closer. Yep it's definitely Lilac and she's kissing Raj. Normally, I would have confronted them and probably beaten his ass again, but I feel too broken to move. Today is the worst day ever.
************************************************************************Sorry this ones pretty boring guys, but it will definitely pick up over spring break...
