Unfortunately, I woke to find the sky already swallowed by darkness, about an hour after dinner had ended in the inn's dining area. It was disappointing, especially since I was eating for two.
Still, I could order in, so I did.
Before I chose anything, though, I thought to check whether Roy had already eaten. I was just about to message him when a notification from him appeared on my screen. He was asking if I was going to eat, but since I hadn't replied for more than thirty minutes, he'd gone ahead and had dinner without me.
I couldn't really blame him for that.
So I placed my order through the app, and as I did, I was reminded of the time I had shut myself away from the world to grieve Topher.
After that, there was nothing left for me to do except wait. And while I waited, an email from a client landed in my inbox, asking to book my photo studio.
I grabbed my laptop since I couldn't open the form on my phone. After reading through the client's details and checking the required documents, I saw that everything was in order, so I sent a reply to confirm.
When I was done, I noticed my spam inbox had way more messages than usual. Normally, I would have ignored them, but for some reason, I felt this strange urge to open them and delete everything.
So I clicked into the spam folder, ready to clear it all out, until one message caught my attention.
There was an email from Topher.
My eyes widened. I couldn't believe it.
However, it's not what you think. The email was sent about a week before he died, so that means he was still in Paris when he sent it.
I couldn't understand why it had ended up in my spam folder. At first, I thought it was just another fake account. But I had to know what it was.
When I clicked on it, I saw there was a video attached. I couldn't play it while it was still marked as spam, so I moved the email to my regular inbox.
Once everything was set, I pressed play.
There he was. Topher.
He was standing on a balcony outside his hotel room at night, his phone propped up on a stand so he could record himself properly. The moment I saw him again, my eyes filled with tears.
Before he said a word, he fixed himself up, smoothing down his hair and adjusting his sweater. He was so cute it almost hurt.
"Okay, that looks good," Topher said, glancing at himself in the selfie camera before taking a deep breath. "Here we go. Hey, Peps, I'm sorry I haven't called or messaged you in so long, so that's why I wanted to make you this video message. I've been crazy busy, and on top of that, I couldn't get into my social media accounts for some reason. I even forgot my password. I know you always kept telling me to write them down."
I laughed for a second through my tears. He was right. I had told him over and over again to write them down every time he changed his password after a hacking incident, or when he bought a new phone or laptop.
"I don't have a good memory like yours," he went on, sounding amused. "God, I miss you so much. Anyway, Paris is beautiful. I can't wait for you and me to have our honeymoon here. The food is delicious, and the lights at night are magical to walk around under with our hands held together. Also, I bought a suit for our wedding, which you'll see when I get back to Barcon. I found a great hotel where we can stay, with the best view of the Eiffel Tower. We'll make another memory for the books, and for the rest of our lives after that."
"I know I'll be away a lot, but you know what I've learned in life? Not to stop making memories. I love you so much, Peps. To spend every second of every day of my life with you, but I want you to be happy even when I'm not around. Don't miss out on anything, because what good can you do if you can't use your good memory to look back on those wonderful moments, right? Well, that's it for now. I have to go to bed. Good night, and I'll see you in my dreams."
