Charlotte felt the world stop spinning.
The sound in the room disappeared, every thought silenced beneath the sight of Chloe's pale body lying motionless against Elijah's white sheets. Blood stained the mattress beneath her sister like crimson ink spreading across paper.
"No..." Charlotte whispered again, her voice cracking.
"No, no, no..."
She stumbled forward, nearly falling as she reached the bed. Her trembling hands grabbed Chloe's cold fingers.
"Chloe?" she breathed. "Chlo, wake up."
Elijah stood frozen behind her. Even he looked shaken, his expression hollow with disbelief.
Charlotte touched the wound at Chloe's stomach, her hands instantly covered in blood.
"Oh my god..."
"She was already gone when we arrived," Elijah said quietly. "There was nothing I could do."
Charlotte turned sharply toward him, tears flooding her eyes.
"Who did this?"
Elijah's jaw tightened.
"I don't know."
Charlotte shook her head violently before looking back at her sister.
"No. She can't be dead. She was just with me. She made me get out of bed..." Her breathing became uneven. "She promised me things would get better."
Her voice shattered completely.
"She promised."
Elijah slowly stepped closer. "Charlotte—"
"Don't." She pulled away from him instantly. "Don't tell me it'll be okay because it's not okay!"
Her scream echoed through the mansion walls.
"She's all I had left!"
The grief hit her like a tidal wave. First Klaus. Now Chloe.
The room suddenly felt too small, too suffocating.
Charlotte pressed her forehead against Chloe's hand as sobs ripped through her chest. She couldn't breathe around the pain.
Elijah watched silently. A thousand years alive and yet grief still looked the same every single time.
Broken.
Hopeless.
Cruel.
After several moments, Charlotte finally lifted her head.
"She hated this house," she whispered weakly. "She always said it was too dramatic."
A small broken laugh escaped her before more tears followed.
Elijah looked away briefly, guilt burning inside him. He had promised Chloe he would help save Klaus for Charlotte's sake. Instead, he had failed them both.
Charlotte slowly stood from the bed.
Her entire body shook.
