The Recorder
"Now, tell me what your worst fear is." Uncle Drake said. Mary breathed in slowly. In, out in, out. "Ok, now tell me your fear." Uncle Drake said once more. Mary looked as though she was about to cry, but she mentioned to blurt out a few words. "My, my worst fear..." Mary said. "Go on." Uncle Drake said. He pressed the record button on the tape recorder. "My worst fear, is when I feel as though a spider is crawling into my ear whenever I sit down!" Mary cried." "Ok," Uncle Drake said. "Tell me more." "Well, I just always get this feeling, that there's a big, fat, hairy spider, that's about to wriggle into my ear, and eat all the veins in my body." Mary said. "I can never forget the feeling." Mary cried. "It's ok." Uncle Drake said, trying to relax her. "Now, when you leave this room, your fear will literally stay here." "For real?" Mary said, looking wondrously at Drake. "Yes. It's not made up." Drake said, as he pressed the stop button on the tape recorder. Mary stood up, with a bit more of a smile on her face. "Thanks for your help." Mary said. "Don't mention it." Drake said. Drake shook hands with Mary, and sent her out the door. Drake sat down in his office. Looking around, at the black walls. The cracked holes in the walls, the ripped curtains, the giant gloom-looking carpet, and then his eyes came to the tape recorder. He stared at it, for five whole minutes. His eyes widened with fear, then closed down, almost until they were shut. Then widened, then squinted down again. Lots of his memories from what had happened in the past sessions he has had with his students, had not been well. He stared at it a bit more. Until Pont and Deena, his nephew and niece, came into his office. "Hey kids, what's up?" Uncle Drake said. "He Uncle Drake." Pont and Deena said. "Whatcha doin?" Pont said. "Ah..." Drake said. "He's just revising on some of the last lesson I guess." Deena told Pont. "Oh ok." Pont said. "How was school?" Uncle Drake asked. "Good." They both said. "Uncle Drake, whats that?" Pont said as he reached out for the tape recorder. "DON'T... touch!" Uncle Drake said, as he slapped Pont's hand. "Sorry." Pont said. "That's fine, Uncle Drake replied. It's just a tape recorder." "Then what's so special about it?" Deena asked. "It's just..." Uncle Drake said, trying to hide his worries. "It's just where I record what the student and I say every lesson." "Ok cool." Deena said. "Can we hear what you said in the lesson you just did?" Pont asked. "NO!" Uncle Drake screamed. "I mean, maybe another time." He said. "Drake, you know how you ask people what their worst fear is." Pont said. "Yes?" Drake said. "Well, what's your worst fear?" Pont asked. "It's..." Drake said. "It's what?" Pont asked. "It's nothing." Deena said. "That's not true." Pont said. "What is it really?" "As Deena said, I'm afraid of nothing." Drake said as he left his office. Pont shut the door behind him quietly. "We're alone!" Pont said. "What are you doing?" Deena asked quietly. "Time to see what that recorder does." Pont replied. They both looked down at the dull, black tape recorder. Pont dived onto the small table, and pressed the play button. Deena gasped. "We can't listen to what Uncle Drake says to his students! It's private!" she said. "Shut up." Pont said. "Now sit down and listen." Pont sat in Uncle Drakes massive seat, and Deena sat in the student seat. They both listened to the whole conversation. Out from the recorder, came: "What is your worst fear?" Uncle Drake said. Pont and Deena listened carefully to the tape recorder. "Well, I just always get this feeling, that there's a big, fat, hairy spider, that's about to wriggle into my ear, and eat all the veins in my body." Mary said. "When you leave, your fear will be left in this room." Drake said. Pont stopped the recorder. "Freaky!" Deena said. They both sat there. Suddenly, Deena stared at something next to Pont's ear. "Don't move!" Deena said. Pont looked to the left, and there was a big fat spider right next to his ear. "Ah!" he screamed, as he reached out for a cushion and swiped it off the couch. "Phew." He said. "That's scary, on the recorder they were just talking about spiders, and then one went right next to your ear!" Deena said. "It must have been a coincident. "I'll record your biggest fear now." Pont said to Deena. He pressed the record button. "My worst fear..." Deena said. "My worst fear, is that I think there is someone watching me from behind." She said. "When you leave this room, that fear will be gone!" Pont said. "Really?" Deena asked. "Well, I'm not sure if it's really true, but that is what Uncle Drake says." "My turn." Pont says. "What is your worst fear, Pont?" Deena asked. "My worst fear..." Pont said. "Is that every night, I think a snake is rattling down the stairs, coming for me." "When you leave this room, that fear will be gone." Deena said. She pressed the stop button on the recorder. They played back their recording. "My worst fear..." they heard the recorder play. 'Someone watching me...' they heard. 'When you leave this room, that fear will be gone.'
They played the rewind button, and then hit play. They listened carefully to everything they said. "Snake is rattling down the stairs..." they heard. "Someone watching me..." Pont shivered. So did Deena. Deena switched off the recorder and jumped out of her seat. "I don't like this anymore, can we get out of this room?" Pont asked. "Yeah totally." Deena agreed. They went to the stairs, and were about to go to their rooms, but they were stopped by a big, fat snake! "Ahrr!" they cried. They ran into their parents' room and locked the door. They put their ears against the door, they could hear the rattling and the hissing. "You know what this means?" Deena said. "It mean's we're about to be snakes dinner?" Pont said sarcastically. "That and it means the tape recorder, it's... it's haunted!" Deena said. "Anything you say into the recorder, becomes into really life!"
"But that could only mean..." Pont said, as both of them slowly turned around. A man, in a black vest, was standing on the bed. As still as a statue, the man just stared at the children.
