WHEN I THINK BACK, I WAS A HARDCORE FATALIST. Maybe it's because of the way love and romance was drilled into my head as a child, but I dedicated my young years fantasizing about finding my 'soulmate'.
Not that I don't believe in their existence, i just find it hard to believe it for myself. Years after Peter had left my life, I had hoped and prayed that he'd come back to me and swoop me off my feet. That dream only lasted so long until it became nothing but a reminder of what I thought I could never achieve.
Someone to stay.
At some point, I convinced myself that fatalism was for those who refused to accept reality for what it was. I became a nihilist in its purest form. Turning my teens into an era of angst and depression. I gave up on believing God existed, let alone a person I was destined to be with.
Not until my father got sick, did it reignite those old sentiments that maybe some things are bound to happen, and not because of chance.
A few days ago, my team and I had a celebratory dinner with Peter and his teammates. It was both a great time and a great opportunity to get to know Peter and calm any suspicions that he was connected to, or the person who was, my childhood crush and friend.
I never learned of his time in Michigan as we were interrupted by Mia, who convinced everyone it was time to leave the restaurant and enjoy the rest of our Friday night out on the town. Fortunately for her, mostly everyone was happy to join, except for myself and two other people who were on Peter's team.
Peter had remained quiet and didn't give a direct answer. But I could tell he was ready to go home. He ended up texting me the next morning, asking when I would be free for coffee and breakfast despite us already discovering why we were familiar to each other.
I certainly wasn't complaining. Not only did I get to see his beautiful face again but I would get more answers. I just wanted to know what's in it for him.
I finally made it to a small coffee shop downtown near the university. We decided to meet earlier this morning as we both had prior engagements to attend to. It was about 7 am and the shop had just opened, so there were hardly any people there aside from two baristas and an older gentlemen seated in one of the corners of the store.
I was dressed quite casual today, partly because i was off from work today and mainly because my period had started and I was feeling sluggish. I work a pair of light wash jeans, a sweatshirt hoodie with Tupac'a face on it and an extra jacket on top of it to keep me warm. It was extraordinarily cold today, so I made sure to also wear my beanie and hand knitted scarf.
I had shown up to the coffee house a little earlier than anticipated. With no sign of Peter, I went ahead and placed an order for a small black coffee with honey and a splash of cream. While waiting for my order I found a small nook near the back of the shop that had two medium-sized arm chairs and a small table between them with a dim light lamp.
