Chapter 4: Bad day to bad week

Cadience:

Gaw, I was so stupid. I was rushing in way to fast. She’d pull away. That was just her way, and I knew that, yet I still pushed her. She’d been in a really shitty mood the rest of the day. She was craving hard and long. Chloe asked her if she was dressing up for “Camo Day” and Lil pretty well told her to shove her camo up her butt. To be completely honest, I was a little scared. Maybe she wasn’t strong enough to put such a big reminder of her past on her yet. I couldn’t imagine her not being. Like she said, she’d been on her own and clean for months. Still it worried me.

“You alright, Son?” Dad asked as he came into the living room. I was splayed out on the sofa like an old, couch potato. He had grease all over his hands and some on his face. He wore overalls and work boots and seemed extremely tired.

“Yeah Pops, just some downer issues with Lil.” I’d told him she was here and clean but he still didn’t like it. He’d felt sorry for her when we were younger, always trying to save her right along with me, but somewhere along the way he gave up on her. That knowledge burned me to the core. It hurt almost as much as me not recognizing her right away at school.

“Do not stress yourself out over that girl, Cadience James. I told you. Help her if it’s convenient, but don’t ruin yourself for her again.” He spoke sternly but sadly. He’d figured out when I was young that I loved that crazy girl.

“I can’t just let her go, Dad. I can’t. Lord knows I’ve tried, but just seeing her, completely rewires my brain.” I saw him close his eyes in worry. “Did you ever have anyone like that?”

“Yes, Son, I did. Your mother.” He walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. “Just don’t ruin everything you’ve become. You can’t help someone that doesn’t want help.”

He left me sitting there while he took a shower. His words played repeatedly in my head. I thought it was entirely possible to help someone who didn’t want to be helped, at least in Lili’s place. I could do it. I would do it.

“Camo Day” was more popular than the theme the day before. I was shocked to see just how much people dressed up for it. I didn’t, because I didn’t own anything camouflage. I met up with Tanner as I got to school, and to my dismay, Jennett was with him. She was a flirt, a big flirt who apparently tagged me as her next subject. I completely understood why she and Leslie had been friends. They were like replicas of one another.

“Hey Sexy,” she cooed, and I wanted to shudder. Sure I was in love with Lili, but I was a guy. I’d taken up many easy girls on their offers. I was pretty sure I could have had her naked within half an hour if I’d tried. “Are you going to the dance Friday after the game?”

“Yeah with Chloe,” I said casually, and I saw Tanner smirk.

“Oh,” she pouted. “Well whatever, but hey, you better vote for me today.” I told her that I would though I didn’t plan on it. I wasn’t planning on voting. She sprung off ahead of us, shaking her hips on purpose. Dang, she was making me miss the old days.
