So, I'm guessing if you're reading this book you already know who I am. You probably think you know my life. Maybe you're even envious of it, but I'm writing this to prove you wrong. My name is Cassie. I have blonde hair and brown eyes, tanned skin, and a husband known around the world. I guess I'm writing this to let you know my story. The real one. Because it's about time it was told.
It all started when I was 16. Literally, it started right smack exactly on my sweet 16. Happy birthday to me... Actually, I can't really hate the day. There was nothing really wrong with the day itself, it just happened to be the kickoff point for the chaos that was to become my love life.
I remember jumping straight out of bed that morning. There was one thought and one thought only racing through my head. Skyline! I'm going to see Skyline! They were only my favorite boy band in the world, no big deal or anything....
My parents had bought me tickets for my birthday and I was going to be going with my best friend Anna Warder. Both of us were crazily in love with the entire band, and also extremely excited to be seeing them live and in person!
I checked my cell phone as I got up, I had a text from Anna confirming that I would be picking her up after school before the concert. I shot a response back telling her that I would and I asked her what she was wearing. We obsessed over the details of outfits and such for about an hour before I finally rolled out the door and headed to school.
School was school. It was boring as all get out. But, school also meant I could stare at Jack for a few hours during our two shared classes. Yep, Jack Everest was my crush. He never paid me much attention, though. He was your typical school girl crush; hot, popular, funny. I wasn't very unique in my taste in guys, but who cared? I was sixteen, I was allowed to be a bit shallow!
Knowing all about my little (huge) crush on Jack, Anna nudged me with her elbow between classes. "So, are you going to actually talk to him today?" she asked. The look on her face said she already knew the answer to her question, but I guess she wanted to give me a chance to do something exciting in my life.
I shook my head. "No way. What would I even say?"
"Um,' hi' usually works." she responded with a slight eye roll.
I rolled my eyes right back. "Not happening, sorry Anna!"
I heard Anna give a huff of frustration, but I was already whirling through the open doorway of my English class, smiling at everyone and calling out a few greetings to my closer friends, as well as thanking everyone for their chirped birthday wishes.
I was good, I was happy, I was single, but I was not content. Something felt like it was missing. The desire to be in a relationship ate away at me, but why couldn't I have been content? It would have worked out so much better in the long run.
I sensed more than saw Jack enter the room. Rebecca, the girl I was sitting next to and conversing with, let her eyes linger on him longer than she normally would, and I also heard his laugh coming from somewhere behind me. I was so, so good, and feeling a bit cocky. Anna was right, it wouldn't destroy the world if I greeted him, right? What did I have to lose? I was confident enough in my birthday high to raise a hand and wave as I turned around. "Hi, Jack!" I called out before I could change my mind and take the words back. Some small, strange part of my mind found it hilarious that I had just yelled 'hijack' in a crowded room, and I struggled to hold in the giggles threatening to burst out.
