Chapter 2

I threw myself onto my bed as thoughts went swirling through my mind. The look he gave me as I left him…it gave me chills just thinking of it. The only question though is why? Alex has always been like an older brother to me, so why am I having such feelings towards him? Wouldn’t that be like liking Jay? I shivered at the thought. This is all so ridiculous! I rolled over and squeezed my eyes shut as I tried to block all of my thoughts out until I eventually drifted off to sleep.

The next morning I slowly woke up smiling as I thought of Alex… Wait I can’t think like this. I need to distract myself today from all thoughts of Alex. I know! I’ll go ride my horse Serenity; she has always been able to distract me when I ride her. As I make my way to the Royal Stables I hear my name called. Slowly I turn to face the caller. Alex runs up beside me and spins me around.

“Where are you going this morning Seraphina? Don’t you remember we had plans this morning?” he asks smirking, waiting for my answer.

“Well I wanted to go ride Serenity.”

“Well I’ll go with you. You can’t get out of spending the morning with me so easily.”

“Oh fine Alex, but don’t expect Serenity and me to wait for you and Tempest.” I laugh and sprint to the stables.

We lay on our backs staring at the clouds as our horses graze nearby. I kept shooting quick glances at Alex whenever I thought he wasn’t looking. His hair was slightly damp from the sweat worked up from our race through the royal grounds. He had a relaxed smile on his face and his eyes were shut. Then suddenly they were open, bright and shining as they looked deep into my own.

I felt the heat rush to my cheeks as I quickly turned my head away. I felt his fingers brush my cheek as he whispered, “Sera, please look at me.” I slowly moved my head until I was once again looking into his eyes. Oh, his eyes. They were such a stunning shade of blue, as if when he was created all the oceans in the world had been transferred to his body. His fingers were still on my cheek, slightly caressing me. My ears were filled with the sound of my pounding heart as I fell deeper into his gaze.

I abruptly sat up and looked away from the now confused and hurt look on Alex’s face.  Why am I suddenly feeling this way for him? I must not feel these emotions towards my best friend. Not only that, but my father would never approve me loving someone of a lower rank. It would be wrong of me, wouldn’t it? I sighed as the rush of the conflicting feelings filled my head. I was quickly brought back to reality by Alex’s hand on my shoulder.

“Hey Sera are you ok? You seem unwell. I’m sorry for touching you so freely; sometimes I forget our difference in rank.”

“No, no that’s not why I turned from you! I like you touching me! Oh! Wait that came out wrong!” I blush as a smirk appears on his face.

“Oh, so you like me touching you then?” he says as he brushes a strand of my hair behind my ear.

My blush deepens as we look into each other’s eyes once again. Oh gosh what am I doing? He slowly starts leaning towards me and I close my eyes in anticipation. Oh gosh even if it’s wrong I can’t help myself. Just as our lips were merely inches away, we heard the sound of thundering hooves coming towards us. We pulled way, both of our cheeks red from what almost just happened. Looking up I see Ethaniel making his way over to where we sat. The look on his face was unreadable; surly he must have seen the almost kiss? I bite my lip and look down as he dismounts his horse, Efnisien.  He walks over until he stands above us, when I slowly look up, I see an emotion flicker across his face, but as soon as it was there it disappeared into his normal smirk.

“Alex you’re late to training. Again.” There is a slight note of impatience in his voice as he looks at his younger brother. Before Alex says anything, I speak up.

“Sorry Ethaniel it was my fault, I asked him to go for a ride with me.”

“Letting our princess fight your battles now Alex?” He sneers at his brother as Alex flushes red.

“Oh course not; I’m willing to take whatever punishment the Captain gives me.” I flinch slightly imagining the punishment Captain Niclaus would give him. I looked at him and mouthed the words I’m sorry to which he gave a half smile and shrug.

“Alex how about you go to training, while I escort the princess back.”

“The princess has a name, and she can escort herself back.” I scoffed back at him. Alex rolled his eyes and made a slight bow to me before mounting his horse. He looked at his brother; an unseen message being passed between the two. He made one last glance at me and galloped off. After watching his retreating figure I turn to look at Ethaniel. There’s something different from when we last saw each other.

“Is that a scar on your chin Ethaniel?” I say as I reached towards his face. He jerks away as if afraid of my touch. He avoids my gaze and mumbles, “I received it when I was attacked by bandits.” There’s something in his voice that made it seem like he was lying. But I’m sure it’s just his pride that made him lie, so I let it pass.

“Well let’s head back to the castle” I nod and mount my horse. As we ride back to the castle I can’t help but to worry about Alex and what punishment he will receive.
