The boy disappears mumbling something about fish. I sit on the sand and lean against one of the rocks. I empty out the contents of my backpack.

I am so glad it's waterproof. When I got it I thought it was stupid and unnecessary. I pull out my Ipod, my phone, a thin gray sweater, my favorite books, and chargers for my electronics. Of course I won't get any signal out here. And the chargers won't be any good.

I click on my Ipod and it's on 90 percent charge. I decide to conserve and only use it when I'm  really depressed.

"I'm back!" The boy comes back with two cooked fish and a handful of berries. He sees my confused look. "I have a stash. Behind one of the trees. I cook them and then just eat them for days so I don't have to start a fire every day." I just nod.

He gives me one of the fish and some berries. My stomach growls but again I am suspicious. He could have poisoned the fish. And these berries look alot like the ones he told me were poisonous. I cautiously take a bite.

He smiles. I love his smile. "Hey, I just realized. I never got your name."

"Kai." He says. "What about you?"

"Emily." An awkward silence follows.

I look out the cave entrance. Night has fallen. You can actually see the stars out here. Not like in polluted L.A. where I live.

We finish eating. "So uh..." Kai rubs the back of his neck. "I don't have like...any blankets or stuff....but the sand is not so bad..."

It takes me a second to process this and ignore the red flags again. "Oh, it's fine." I yawn. My phone says it's 9 pm Los Angeles time. I stretch out on the sand and put my head on my backpack.

Kai sits on a rock by the entrance and keeps guard. I fall asleep instantly.
