Chapter 1 -Percy's POV

I guess that you could call me troubled, in many ways.

I am 8 years old. I live on the streets. I steal for a living. A year ago my step-father killed my mother. A month after that I ran away.

I hid from everybody who passed me because I knew they would take me somewhere I didn't know. Kids weren't meant to live on the streets or by themselves. The streets were dangerous. I had seen other runaways be taken by men and women and never return.

There were also these things that chased me around ever since I ran away from Smelly Gabe. Mama used to tell me stories about Greek heroes and gods and I listened enough to recognize some of the creatures following me. They were monsters. I saw the Minotaur once when I snuck onto a bus. He was just walking around, smelling the air every now and then. There was also a pretty lion that was attacking a kid in an orange shirt. I ran the other direction when I saw it look at me.

Suddenly I heard a growl. I turned to see a giant black hound, and not like a regular dog. It was at least as big as the taxi cabs here.

I ran. After I ran around the corner I looked back only to see the dog still chasing me. I whipped my head back forward and turned around another corner. I ran straight into a man covered completely in black.

"I-I-I-I-I." This man absolutely terrified me. There was just something about him. He didn't look scary, but I was petrified. The feeling he radiated was terrifying. He grabbed my arm to stop me from going anywhere.

"Hello, μικρό κορίτσι." The language sounded familiar. The picture of a man with my eyes appeared in my head before I heard the dog growling again. I yelped and tried to run again, but the man's grip on my arm tightened. I hid behind the man when it got closer.

The dog whimpered and crawled down on its tummy.

The man waved his hand and the dog dissappeared. Wow! I looked at the man curiously.

"Come with me." He said. I followed him, because I knew what he did was not normal. I looked at the skull ring on his finger. The ruby eyes sparkled. I followed him to an alley. He then grabbed me and my vision blurred. It was weird. It was like we were going really fast. My stomach felt kinda funny and air rushed past my face. Kinda like a rollercoaster. I've never been on one, but it feels like what I expect.

I tumbled into a room as we suddenly stopped. It was hot. I looked around to see a large room surrounded with something that looked like fire. It was both beautiful and frightening. The man patted his clothes and started to talk.

"So Persephone." How did he know my name? A woman walked in asking what did he want. Oh he was talking to her. "Not you!" He yelled across the room. Never mind he was talking to me. The lady walked over to me and looked me. Why was she looking at me?

"Where'd you find her?" It was then that I realized what I had done. I went somewhere with a stranger. Mama told me never to talk to strangers. "Stranger danger," she always said. I started to freak out a little. I wanna go back.

"A hellhound was chasing her. I went through her memories and I didn't like what I saw. I thought she could stay here." He looked really uncomfortable saying that.

The lady looked at me intently. It felt like she was looking into my soul. It felt funny. She pulled back.

"Do you want to stay here? I promise we won't hurt you Percy." I flinched at the name my mother used to call me. "We'll take care of you. We'll feed you, clothe you, protect you. We won't hit you. Ever."

"Your father even won't know that you're here." the man said."It'll  be like you're our own."

I shook my head. "My papa went missing. Mama doesn't... She didn't like to talk about him with me."

"Your father is very much alive. I would know if my brother was dead."

"He died at sea." I repeated again.

"He lives in the sea, sweetheart. Have you heard of Greek gods?" I nodded my head. Mama always told me stories. "Well, they're real. Your father, he's Poseidon, God of the Seas."

"He's alive." They nodded. "And you're his family." Family is supposed to be nice. Mama was nice. Smelly Gabe wasn't family and he was mean. They nodded again. Maybe I could. "You promise not to hit me.

"We promise sweetheart. We'll swear on the River Styx." I remember Mama telling me people can't break break oaths sworn on the River Styx. It's supposed to be more binding than pinky promises, and pinky promises are unbreakable.

"I'll stay with you." The lady squealed.

"I'm Persephone, just like you. I can't believe your mom named you after me." She continued to talk. When she finished I gave them both hugs.

"You said my father was your brother. Then which brother are you?" I pointed to the man.

"Hades, god of the dead."
