"Get up," Jake prompts, dragging the covers slowly off my body. I groan and turn over, smacking his hand away for good measure.
"Come on, Gorgeous," Jake says again, whistling as you would to a disobedient dog.
I don't yet have the energy to complain, so I simply lie there doing nothing before I reply.
"Why?" I finally grumble, sitting up groggily. "Fix your hair," Jake laughs, but I can see that it's not completely genuine.
His smile doesn't reach his eyes, and there's something almost apprehensive about the way he laughs.
"Jake-" "Just get ready, okay?" Jake cuts me off before pecking me quickly on the cheek and leaving the room.
I rise, stretching out slowly. I check the clock on my phone, which read 11:00 a.m.
I stare at the digital clock, puzzled.
Why did Jake let us skip school?
Questions buzz in and out of my head as I stumble around the room, gathering up my clothes.
As usual, Miranda is nowhere to be seen. I wonder if he purposely kicks her out of the house so I don't have to face her?
I chuckle at the absurd thought as I brush my teeth, taking in my sleepy eyes.
"I'm ready," I say to Jake determinedly once I'm downstairs in the kitchen, sounding a hell of a lot like Spongebob.
Jake nods, handing me my brunch, which I take gratefully.
***
After I rush through my meal, Jake whisks me out of the house and into his almightily gigantic car.
"Where are we going?" I ask, poking at Jake's arm. He immediately removes a hand from the steering wheel and intertwines his fingers with mine.
I can't help the slightly giddy feeling that begins to pool in my stomach. Hey, who said that just because I don't act like a girl that I'm not one?
"You remember Alexander?" Jake asks with a soft smile. I grin, remembering how terrified I was the day I first met him. It seems so long ago to me now.
"Of course! He's a sweetie," I laugh and wink. Jake simply rolls his eyes, but continues, "He and Luccio were part of the... Group of people I used to... Work with."
My eyebrows shoot up in disbelief. "Is this why we cut school? To meet up with them?" "That and other things, yeah," Jake replies, smirking. "Plus I couldn't leave you alone in the house," he adds.
"I can imagine Luccio being in that group but... Alexander? I don't think so," I reply thoughtfully, giving his fingers a slight squeeze.
Jake gently squeezes back before continuing, "Alexander left before Luccio and I did."
I nod, eyes widening slightly. "Well that explains a bit," I reply, beginning to play with our still intertwined fingers.
***
"Hello? I'm still here!" I huff, waving my arms around to get their attention. For the past few minutes, Alexander, Luccio and Jake have been turned away from me, whispering like little girls.
I scoff. I mean, come on. Honestly.
Jake rolls his eyes and puts his arm around me, turning back to the two brothers.
"Leo has men everywhere. He came to me last night," Luccio confides in a hushed tone. I glance up at Jake, who's face remains completely expressionless as Luccio continues.
"He was asking for help. Of course I didn't give it. I would never-" "Save your breath, Luccio. You have nothing to prove to me," Jake replies in a cool voice.
I almost shiver at the emotionlessness within it.
"What do you suggest we do, then?" Alexander asks, eyeing Luccio suspiciously.
"He has ears everywhere, too, so I suggest we move to someplace safer to talk," Luccio says, pursing his lips.
I shift nervously from foot to foot. I don't trust Luccio at all. Not one bit. I don't give a flying fuck if he's Alexander's brother. They're not the same and I know it.
Jake and Alexander nod, moving to follow Luccio out of the caravan. Before I can follow, I feel a soft vibration in my pocket. Who else has my number but Jake?
"Shit, hold on. I'll follow," I say to Jake, who's tapping his foot impatiently. "There's no way I'm leaving you-"
"Just go! I'm right behind you," I say hastily, pulling my phone out of my pocket and checking the number.
Unknown caller.
"Hello?" I answer, puzzled.
I trail behind Jake, who's walking quickly to catch up with Alexander and Luccio.
"Hello?" I ask again into the receiver, my temper increasing. Before I can get out another hello, a voice sniggers from behind me, grabbing my arm roughly and yanking me back.
"Hello, Princess," Leo says, pressing a handkerchief to my nose firmly.
I struggle with all my strength, but the drugs set in quickly, and soon everything fades to blackness.
