Lipstick makes your lips look bigger, bolder, and more sexy. Do you like fire engine reds, deep purples and plums, or soft pinks and neutrals? No matter what color you choose, there's more to applying lipstick than opening the tube and swiping it on. Read on to learn how to get gorgeous, luscious lips in a few easy steps.

Method 1 of 3: Getting Your Lips Ready

Apply Lipstick Step 1

Check out your complexion. You'll be a lot happier with the results of your lipstick application if you understand which lipstick shades and compositions complement your skin tone and texture. Keep these factors in mind when you're picking out lipstick:

Consider your coloring. If you're dark-skinned, choose a bold color that provides a pretty contrast. If you're pale-skinned a lighter pink or neutral color may stand out enough for you. For a medium complexion, go for mauve, cinnamon or plum.

Consider your skin texture. If your skin is on the dry side, you don't want to go for a matte lipstick; this type of lipstick can dry lips out. Look for a type of lipstick that contains good skin conditioners.[1]

Consider your preferences. Ultimately, wearing lipstick should be fun, and a little daring. If you love the idea of wearing a bold red lipstick, go for it. If you put it on properly it's sure to be show-stopping.

Apply Lipstick Step 2 Version 3.

Exfoliate your lips. If you apply lipstick directly to lips that are dry and flaky, it will look uneven and bring on the wrong kind of attention. Try scrubbing gently at your lips with a toothbrush, or make a paste using sugar and water. Use the paste as an exfoliant and rub some on your lips for about 20 seconds.

Apply Lipstick Step 3

Apply lipliner. Outline your lips with the lipliner. Draw the line from the outside of your lips to the center, carefully tracing the shape of your lips to add definition.

Choose a neutral lip liner. It should be about the same shade as your natural lip shade.

Lipliner can be used as a base, too. Fill in your lips entirely before applying lipstick; the lipstick will stay on longer.

Apply Lipstick Step 4

Apply chapstick. This last step helps condition your lips to keep them from drying out under your lipstick. Use clear chapstick or a dab of petroleum jelly.

Method 2 of 3: Applying Lipstick

Apply Lipstick Step 5

Apply the lipstick. Hold the tube of lipstick to your lips and carefully apply it within the lines you drew with your lipliner. Start from the center of your lips and brush the lipstick outward, filling in all the gaps.

For a more precise application, use a lipstick brush.[2]

If you go outside the lines of your lipliner, wipe the excess lipstick away with a tissue.

Look in the mirror to make sure that you're filling in the lines correctly. Applying lipstick without a mirror can lead to silly consequences.

Apply Lipstick Step 6

Darken the coat. After you have added the first coat of lipstick, apply a little more if desired. However, remember that less is more when it comes to lipstick, because greasy lips are not only unattractive, but also tend to rub off easily, onto everything.

Apply Lipstick Step 7

Blot the lipstick with a tissue. Open your lips and close them over the tissue to remove the excess lipstick. This helps set it in place as well.

Method 3 of 3: Trying Classic Variations

Apply Lipstick Step 9

Create rosebud lips. This chic, feminine look was popular in the flapper era. It's perfect for a theme party or nights when you want to try something new. Outline the middle of your lips, but stop short of the corners. Fill in the outline with a bright red lipstick. Finish the look with a 1930s finger wave hairstyle.

Apply Lipstick Step 10

Make your lips look extra plump. Create this striking look for a night out on the town - it may be a little much for daytime wear. Use lipliner to outline about 1⁄4 inch (0.6 cm) around the perimeter of your lips. Fill in the area inside the lines with the lipstick of your choice. Top the lipstick with a coat of clear lipstick to make your lips pop.

Apply Lipstick Step 11

Go for goth. Popular in the 1990s, goth lips are coming back in style. Choose a dark lip shade like maroon or deep red. Find a lipliner a few shades darker than the lipstick shade. Outline your lips boldly, then fill them in with red. Wear this style with a goth outfit and hairdo.
