Alex brought some plywood to their special place after school and built a little cat house for Sphinx. Rosemary painted it like the tall grass; that filled the field that the river split in half. They placed the cat house on the right side of the river and put a little red flag on top of the house so they could find it, because it blended in so well with the tall grass.
Sphinx was so happy to have a form or shelter from the weather.
Rosemary had a butterfly on the tip of her pinkie (because Wiccans and nature are besties for life and we do cool stuff like that) and was whispering to it about how beautiful the wildflowers were, the butterfly agreed and so did the bees who soon swarmed around her, but not violently, the bees danced around her in celebration of the beauty of nature.
Alex was baffled, Opal sits smiling while being swarmed by bees?
“Opal run, bees!” Alex shouted from the bridge, Opal however only sat there.
“Opal!” Alex said again.
“It’s okay, they won’t sting me.”
“What?! Opal they’re everywhere, run!” Alex shouted. Opal realized Alex didn’t know she was Wiccan.
“He mustn’t know of our friendship, forgive me.” Opal whispered to the bees before running up to the bridge and away from them. She knew it was against Wiccan to abandon or hurt nature but she couldn’t let Alex find out. The wind started speaking to her.
“Why Mistress? Why do you leave them?” The wind whispered.
“I shall explain later in prayer, forgive me great wind of the north.” She whispered running up onto the bridge.
“Opal are you alright, where did you get stung?” Alex asked concerned.
“Nowhere, I’m fine.” Opal said.
“Are you insane? What do you mean ‘they won’t sting me.’?” Alex asked.
“Oh, I, uh, I put bee repellent on before I went outside today, because I heard its bee season.” Opal lied, but it was convincing enough.
“Oh, okay. Well I’m glad you’re okay.”
“Thanks” They walked out over to the bridge and sat over the edge of it, there was no railing on the bridge so it was easy to sit on. Alex took little stones and tossed them down the river that flowed beneath them.
“Alex, do you ever wonder about how things would have been if something didn’t happen or you were to have made a different decision?”
“What do you mean?” Alex asked, confused.
“Like what if I had just stayed inside the day I moved in, and had been too shy to meet the neighbors, I would have never met you, we wouldn’t have became friends, I probably wouldn’t have any friends actually, I most likely wouldn’t have found this place or Sphinx, in fact, I have no idea where I would be right now had I not met you.” Opal said.
“Well that makes me even happier that I met you, if it’s even possible to be any happier.” Alex said.
The two thought of this in silence for a while.
“Alex, are you mad at me for getting into a fight at school with Cathleen?”
“No, I’m not your mom Opal, I don’t have any right to be mad at you, but even so, I could never be mad at you.” Alex said.
“Good, I’d really hate for you to be mad at me.”
“I don’t know if I could be mad at you.”
“It’s getting late, we should go.” Opal said.
“Nah, my parent don’t really care where I go after school.” Alex said.
“Ok, my parents don’t mind either, but what’ll we do for now?”
“I don’t know, do you have any ideas?” Alex asked.
“Have you ever looked up at the stars?”
“Not really,”
“Well those ones,” Opal said, pointing to a cluster of stars shaped like an ‘W’, “That’s Cassiopeia”
“You know constellations?” Alex asked.
“Lots of them,”
“Really?”
“Yeah, like those three in a line, those are Orion’s belt, he has his bow drawn and he’s aiming there,” Opal pointed across the sky to another cluster of stars, “That’s Taurus, Orion’s trying to shoot Taurus’s heart, it’s called the seven sisters.”
“Wow, who knew stars could be so cool?”
“The Greeks told stories with them.”
“Who was Cassiopeia?”
“They call her ‘the queen’.” Opal replied.
“Cool”
