The transition from Earth's atmosphere into the void of space barely registered as a hum against the ship's thick hull, but for Baaul, the shift brought an immense wave of relief entirely due to the bundle in his arms.
Renee was fast asleep in his arms, her pale face buried into the skin of his chest. Her small hands were still clutching weakly at his leather armor straps even in her unconscious state. Yet, despite the deep rhythm of her breathing, he could scent the bitter tang of distress clinging to her skin. It coated her sweet, natural perfume, souring it just enough to irritate his nostrils.
It infuriated him that the male had managed to upset her so deeply. That a weakling of an ooman had made his female shed tears, had made her despair, filled Baaul with a fresh wave of agitation. If he had known the emotional damage the male would inflict before his death, Baaul would have taken his time tearing him apart piece by piece rather than giving him a quick end.
Baaul entered his private quarters, the heavy door sliding shut behind him with a soft pressurized hiss. Moving with deliberate care so as not to disturb her, he lowered himself toward his sleeping mat. He laid Renee down on the thick furs, his massive hands carefully disentangling her slender fingers from his armor. He pulled the heavy woven covering up to her chin, tucking her in securely against the cool air of the ship.
He lingered for a moment, watching her nose twitch in her sleep. She looked so fragile beneath the dark furs, so soft.
Stepping back, Baaul headed straight for the cockpit. He sat in the pilot's command chair and initiated the ship's auto-pilot system, locking in the coordinates for the long journey back to Yautja Prime. Earth receded into a speck of blue and white on his display screens. It was time to take his mate someplace safe. Home.
Before he could rest, there was business to handle. Baaul pulled up his comms panel and drafted an encoded transmission to Xai'an. The message was brief and contained. He confirmed that the Badblood had been eliminated, the evidence of his and the Badblood erased, and while the assignment wasn't entirely fulfilled just yet, it would be as soon as he deposited his mate safely. Xai'an would no doubt take satisfaction in knowing Baaul had claimed his human, but Baaul cared little for his elder's smugness right now.
Sending the encrypted transmission, Baaul closed out the console, stripped off his heavy body armor, and set his biomask aside.
He returned to his quarters in the dim light of the cabin. Slipping onto the mattress, he reached out and gently pulled Renee back into his arms.
The moment his skin made contact with hers, Renee stirred. Without waking, she let out a soft sigh and instinctively shifted, pressing her chest against his broad torso and draping one delicate leg over his thigh. She curled into his broad frame naturally, as if her body recognized his warmth and craved it even in the depths of slumber.
The tense tightness in Baaul's chest slowly began to melt away. The uncomfortable, heavy ache that had settled in his heart back in that filthy ooman building finally eased.
She may have been distressed by the male's betrayal, and her soft heart may have grieved the reality of her old world... but she still sought comfort in him. She chose his heat. She chose his touch.
Baaul rumbled a low, purring vibration deep in his chest, wrapping his massive arm securely around her waist to pull her impossibly closer.
The warm, heavy stillness of the cabin settled over them as Baaul allowed his body to enter a state of deep rest. His mind remained vaguely tethered to the environment, conscious of the quiet hum of the ship's engines and the rise and fall of the female pressed against his chest, but his muscles loosened, yielding to the much-needed recovery after the brutal chase and the fury that had preceded it.
For several hours, he lay like that, suspended in the threshold between vigilance and sleep. His broad chest rose steadily beneath her, serving as both her shield and her anchor against the void outside.
The quiet shifted when he felt small, warm hands begin to move against his skin.
Renee's palm smoothed gently up his bare torso, her touch cautious, almost reverent, as if confirming he was truly there. She shifted her weight, nuzzling her face deeper into the crook of his neck, her breath fanning soft and warm against his collarbone.
Baaul immediately withdrew from his rest state. His dark eyes flickered open, focusing down on the top of her head as a low, resonant rumble vibrated through his chest. He lifted one massive hand, the dark skin of his calloused fingers surprisingly light as he cupped her soft cheek, brushing his thumb across the curve of her jaw.
"Baaul..."
The emotion in her voice was thick, raw, and heavy, making his mandibles twitch. He didn't entirely understand the subtle complexities of ooman emotions, but he felt the weight of it pressing against him.
Renee pushed herself up, her knees sinking into the thick furs as she sat above him to gaze down into his face. Her bright green eyes searched his features, shimmering with unshed tears, before she leaned down. Her soft lips pressed firmly against his mouth in a slow, tender kiss that made his blood run hot all over again.
"Thank you," she whispered against his mouth, her voice trembling. "Thank you for coming to get me. Thank you for protecting me. Thank you... for seeing what I couldn't see."
Baaul turned toward her, shifting his massive frame to sit up and bracing his heavy weight on one elbow as he looked at her. "You are my mate. Always. How you feel? Hurt?"
His gaze tracked over her flushed skin, the faint shadows under her eyes, and the lingering traces of stress still radiating from her body. He had been so consumed by his own primal need to mark her, to erase the scent of that dead ooman from her skin, that he had neglected her condition. That was unacceptable. He should have placed her in the medical pod the moment they boarded. That foolish ooman male had laid hands on her, chained her, dragged her across the continent. Baaul needed to ensure there was no lasting damage to her fragile frame.
"My neck hurts a little bit-Oh! Whoa! Hey!"
Renee squeaked in surprise as Baaul didn't bother waiting for her to finish. In one swift, effortless movement, he swept her into his arms, pushing himself off the mattress and carrying her out of the quarters. He was already in brisk motion toward the ship's medical bay. He should have done this from the very beginning.
Entering the sterile, dimly lit bay, he carefully laid her inside the sleek contour of the medical pod. Before she could attempt to sit back up or protest, he placed a large, firm hand over the center of her chest, gently pinning her against the padded interior.
"Stay," he rumbled, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Heal."
Seeing the protectiveness in his eyes, Renee relaxed beneath his heavy palm, letting out a soft sigh and leaning her head back into the headrest. She allowed him to step back and initiate the pod's scanning sequence.
A soft, translucent beam of blue light swept down the length of her body, starting at her head and moving down to her feet. The diagnostic interface hummed softly as it processed the data, preparing a precise and thorough analysis of her physical condition. It brought up every minor detail like her heart rate, muscle fatigue, tissue density, and chemical levels.
Baaul stepped up to the primary console, his eyes narrowed as he waited for the output. He had expected to see evidence of minor soft-tissue strain. Perhaps internal bruising from his own rough handling of her during their rutting. Maybe even a mild concussion from whatever the ooman male had done to her during the abduction.
He was prepared to mix the necessary healing tonics, to keep her confined to his bed for days if needed. He was prepared for anything. Anything except the brilliant, pulsing white node that began to flash prominently on the holographic display right over her lower abdomen.
Baaul froze. The low hum of his breath died in his throat.
In all his solar cycles, in all his years as a hunter who had seen the strangest marvels across the stars, Baaul had never experienced a shock that paralyzed him to his very core like this. His eyes widened, his mandibles flaring wide in complete and utter disbelief as his brain scrambled to comprehend the glowing Yautja characters that spelled out the biological data on the screen.
How the PAYA was she already pregnant?!
