Mia grinned, eyes trained on the TV, her hands moving seemingly subconsciously. The words '15 kill streak' appeared on the screen for a few seconds, then faded away. She quickly switched her weapons and went for her next victim.

17 year old Mia Anderson was an only child, living with her mom and step-dad. Her step-dad was a lazy ass, but her mother loved him, and she made up for his laziness by being a popular surgeon. Her mom always felt bad for Mia, because she didn't have many friends and got bullied a lot at school, so she bought her daughter all kinds of video games and consoles-almost anything you could think of-Xbox 360. Xbox One, Wii, Nintendo 64, all the Playstations, and exc. Mia was happy like this, and that made her mom happy.

Mia smiled as the level ended and the leaderboard popped up. She was the highest level there was on this game-and the all the others-but she still had fun playing multiplayer.

She decided to return to the home screen and go get a snack then continue. She set her controller down on the floor and switched the light on. She stretched quickly before opening the door and walking upstairs to the kitchen. She quickly glanced at the clock.  6:15. Her mom would be home by 8, and her dad would be home by 7:30, so she had an hour or so to kill before dinner.

Mia opened the fridge and scanned the shelves. She grabbed a can of Coke and a bag of cherries and set them on the counter. She had just turned on the water to rinse the cherries off when her phone rang. She quickly dried off her head and looked at the caller.

Mom. She tapped the answer button and held the phone to her ear. "Hey, Mom. What's  up?"

Her mom's kind voice spoke through the iPhone. "I've got a really bad patient and the surgery won't be done for a few more hours. Do you mind making your step-father some dinner so he's not grumpy? You know he can't even open a can of beans without help."

Mia laughed slightly. "Sure, I'll heat up some leftovers for him."

"Thanks, Honey. See you later. Love you."

"Love you too, Mom." She said before hanging up and setting her phone on the counter.

~1 hour later~

Mia tapped her fingers on the counter rhythmically as she waited for the spaghetti to heat up. She hummed the song Hurricane by 30 Second to Mars while she stirred the sauce.

She finally plated the dish and set it out on the table just in time for her step-father, Rob, to walk in.

"I made you some spaghetti for dinner." Mia said.

"Thanks, Mia." Ron said, a grumpy edge to his voice.

Mia raised an eyebrow, but she shrugged it off and walked back downstairs to her room and switched the Xbox 360 on once again.

~A few hours later~

There was a quiet knock on Mia's door and it opened slowly. She paused her game quickly and turned to see her mom, back from work.

"Hey, sweetie." She greeted and came inside, sitting on the bed next to Mia.

"Hey, Mom." Mia smiled and hugged her. "How's that patient?"

"He's fine. Great, actually. His family is relieved that he's alive, let alone fully functional." She paused. "And they wanted to do something special for me, since I did such a 'great' job... The man and his wife had 2 flight tickets to Hawaii for a couple weeks, but they can't go because he's still recovering... So they gave us the tickets."

"Wow, that's really generous of them." Mia said, a little confused.

"So... I was wondering if you'd like to come with me for 2 weeks. I'm sure Rob won't mind if we have a girls weekend..."

"Mom, I'd really love to go, but don't you remember? I'm leaving for Vidcon this weekend." She said, confused at why her mother had forgotten about that. She really didn't want to blow off her mom, but she had been waiting for years for her parents to let her go to Vidcon.

Her mom looked slightly disappointed, but she quickly covered it up. "Well... Would you mind if Rob and I went?"

Mia thought for a moment. She was hoping her parents would be there when she got on her flight, but she decided she could get there on her own pretty easily. "No, of course not. You two can go have fun."

"Ok... The flight leaves early tomorrow, so we'll have to say goodbye tonight."

~30 minutes later~

"Love you. Have a great trip." Mia hugged her mom before turning to Rob. He held out his had and she shook it. "See you in 2 weeks." She smiled awkwardly before walking downstairs, scratching the back of her neck. She actually wasn't really surprised that her parents were leaving again, they went on vacation all of the time.

It confused Mia, though, at how her mother had so much money, when she went she was gone so often that it seemed like she wasn't at work often enough to make money at all. The harder she thought about it every time they left, the more suspicious she got, but she always just forgot about it after a while.

What confused her even more this time was that her mom had asked her to go this time. First of all, her mom never let her come on her trips with her, and second of all, her mom new Vidcon was this weekend. She had already paid for a plane ticket and everything. She had been planning to go to this for months. Why would her mom even think that she would pass that up?

So basically, Mia was a big fat ball of confusion at the moment.

She sighed loudly as she sat on her bed, turning to TV on. Might as well play some games and forget about it, right?

Hey people!
I'm Scarlet, and this is my first story! How do you like it so far? Is it good? Is it terrible? I'm not a great writer, and I'm kind of coming up with this as I go, so yeah... Well, I'd love to hear what you have to think about it... I'm not going to post the next chapter until I get at least one comment, cuz I'd like to know that someone is reading it. Also, I'm a really 'in the moment' writer, so my updates will be very random and slow...

Thanks for reading!
