I sat in my black suit next to Joannah. I willed myself to look around but I just didn't have the heart for it.
My arms wrapped around her as she cried into my shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, love," she mumbled at me.
"No, I'm sorry," I responded with complete guilt. She's the mother. She shouldn't feel the need to offer me condolences.
I helped her slowly walk up to his casket.
He laid there peacefully.
My little angel had his arms crossed, like he was sleeping. Like he would wake up any second and ask for his morning cup of tea.
Joannah cried harder the moment she laid her eyes on him.
"My baby! My poor little baby boy!" she kept screaming and shouting as I struggled to hold her up and stop myself from crying.
The tears flowed freely as someone else rushed up to help me.
I looked up to see her husband standing with me.
He held onto her as she sobbed and guided her back to her seat.
I pulled out the little black box that I had kept in my pocket as I walked closer.
"I promised myself to ask for your hand once you were healthy enough to get married at church. Your mum said that it had always been your dream. But you wanna know something, love? You were my dream. You've always been my dream."
Mum was suddenly at my side as she held my trembling figure, "It's okay, Harry."
"It's not though mum. He's gone. He's really gone. He's not coming back."
She held onto me tighter as I let her support my weight. I no longer had the energy to keep myself standing. I hardly had enough energy to continue to breathe without hyperventilating.
"Bring him back to me Mummy. I want him back. Mummy, tell him to come back. Tell him that I need him."
She rubbed circles into my back as I cried.
Suddenly I was sitting in a hospital room with Lou.
"Hazza?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
"I love you too Lou."
I wiped the tears from my eyes.
"Haz, don't cry."
"But you're ill, Lou."
"Nothing I can't get over."
"You have cancer Lou."
"Hazza, if it's my time to go then I need to go."
"I don't want you to go. Stay with me."
"I can't."
"Why not?"
"They can't fight it like the other ones. This is a different one. A new one. I heard them say it."
I let the tears flow instead of wiping them away, there was no use in it.
"C'mere Hazza," he said as he patted his bed lightly.
I sat down.
"Lay with me."
I laid my long body next to his small one.
