At lunch, Casey and I have spot on the upper side of the cafeteria, only two tables away from the soda machines and food rapers thrown from the exit doors. Sitting with us is our friend Tyler, we kinda became friends in freshman year, when the poor guy showed up at the halloween dance dressed up as a wiener. A couple of football players thought it'd be funny to swipe his bun, making him look offensive. Tyler ran to the chaperones. The football players got detentions. And thats how Tyler got his nickname wiener.
"Nice hair" Tyler smirks, eyeing Casey's new hair. She recently dyed it black and it looked beautiful but she cut her hair and it now reached her shoulders, which looked kinda weird since were used to seeing her with long hair and ombre color. "For your information, it goes with my style", "Oh yeah and what's that? tumblr girl gone wrong?" Tyler said laughing, "Laugh all you want, but i won't be so funny when I'm rich and famous with my own makeover show."
"Wait will that makeover be for you?" Tyler says bursting out laughing, "Back off" I say, threatening him with a forkful of mac n cheese, aimed and ready to launch into his light brown hair. "You'll never do it" he dares. "Just think about the mess that could leave on the table" I drop my fork to my plate, avoiding a possible food fight. "I think were feeling a little kind today, Hannah?" he asks.
"Very funny" I say. "And speaking of kind", he continues "Did either of you hear about the new kid? Word is he's a killer"
"Killer hottie, i hope" Casey says, slipping a spoon full of Nutella into her mouth. "Killer as in one who kills" he explains. "Rumors has it, he killed his girlfriend, pushed her off a cliff. The girl ended up landing against a rock and splattering to her body's death." "Sounds like someone's been watching too much Tv" Casey says. "Its never too much" he says in his own defense.
"Wait" I say, putting my fork down, "What makes you think the rumor is true?" i say looking at him. "Oh, that's right" Casey grins "Hannah doesn't believe in rumors, even since they made up that one about her". Tyler laughs, knowing just what she's talking about. Freshman year, Rebbeca Stone, just because i didn't let her copy on my math test, decided to get me back by saying, i had a habit of eating in the bathroom while doing my business, which is not true. For three hole months, i had people avoiding whatever bathroom stall i used.
Before i can defend myself. Jack comes and drops his books at the end of the table, "Hey ladies" he says, "And wiener" He nods at Tyler. "Who's laughing now?" I shoot Tyler an evil smirk. Jack and I used to date, but now were just friends. People like Casey insist that he and I should give it another try, but honestly, we probably never should've dated in the first place. It totally affected our perfectly platonic friendship. And ever since, things haven't quite been the same between us.
"Aren't we looking good this year?" Casey takes a 'seductive' bite of her Nutella, slowly stripping Jack. Not so surprisingly, Jack doesn't take her 'seductive' actions as a compliment. Instead he ignores her and puts his attention on me. "Are we still on for study group this year? I could use some help in french", "I guess" I say. "Let me check my schedule and see when I'm free", Jack nods and leaves, and Casey gives me a kick under the table. "Have you gone mad?" she asks, "That boy's been working out, his a total nine on a one to ten scale."she says and looks back at him. " If you like tall, and blond, then maybe" Tyler says, "Personally, i think some girls prefer charm and personality" he said.
"Too bad you fall short there, too, huh?" Casey says, giving Tyler a wink. "Jack and I are just friends" I remind her. "Friends, what you need is a man." I look up at the clock, suddenly eager for the bell to ring. And thats when i see him.
The boy from the parking lot. I feel myself stand. And i feel my heart jump up into my throat. He sees me too, i know he does.
"Um Hannah, are you okay?" Casey asks, following my gaze. "Check it out" Tyler says. "That's him, the guy who killed his girlfriend"
The boy pauses, looking at me for just a second before turning away and walking out the door.
