I race down the stairs as soon as my mother calls me for dinner. I'm starved, the only thing served at school for lunch was Turkey Gravy. It's a disgusting, foul-smelling substance that I'm sure no one has a strong enough digestive system for. I could never eat such a thing, so all I could eat was half an apple, given to me by my best friend, Bristol, which was her snack because she was going to eat school lunch as well.
"Hey honey, how was school today?" my mother asked while serving meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans to my father and sister. I could already smell the lemon bars in the oven for dessert.
"Great, but I'm starved. The only thing they served at lunch today was Turkey Gravy," I replied.
"Oh, I'm sorry sweetie. I'm serving dinner so sit down if you want some,"
"With your cooking? I wouldn't miss it for the world." Mom smiles at my gratefulness, then serves me the meatloaf, beans, and potatoes.
"So kids," Mom says, referring to Cameron (my sister) and I, "Your father and I have something to share with you guys."
"Yes, your mother and I are delighted to say that your cousin, Bella, is staying with us for the summer, while Aunt Sarah and Uncle Richard are going to South Africa to help families get fresh water and warm food."
Cameron and I almost choke on our beans.
"Bragging Bella!?!?" we exclaim.
"What? She doesn't brag that much," Dad tries to reason with us, but it will never work with Bella staying with us.
"Oh she's the absolute worst!" Cam shoots back, as I nod my head vigorously in agreement.
"You two will just have to learn to love her. She is your cousin, and she can't go with Sarah and Richard. It's too harsh for her." mom pounds on us, but I face palm in return as Cameron shakes her head. I couldn't joke about Bragging Bella, nothing is too harsh for her. She just acts innocent.
Cam and I finish eating our dinner and those delicious lemon bars. We walk upstairs to discuss what we are going to do about our cousin.
