Every day, Soul Edge gains more and more strength. I worry for my comrades. The more we fight, the more discouraged we get. Soul Edge calls to me, promising me all of my heart's desires. I will not give in to greed and vanity like the others. The cursed sword cannot change my alignment. There is no soul that can do that.

I doubt that you could be so ignorant (there will be somebody reading this eventually, right?) as to not know what Soul Edge is, but for the sake of history, I will elaborate upon the subject. Soul Edge is a sword with quite the curse. It came to life from a strange magical blacksmith one day when the smith decided to mix dragon's blood into the blade's mold. A single yellow dragon's eye opened up from the side of the blade, staring up at its maker. A voice came from the sword. I will not go into details, but the sword tricked the blacksmith into becoming its wielder.

You may be wondering why it's so bad that someone decided to simply wield a sword. Soul Edge is not your ordinary sword. When somebody takes Soul Edge as their blade, the sword's spirit completely possesses the wielder's body, using it as its own. It uses those it tricks into becoming a host body so that it can slaughter as many people as it can find, and devour their souls, becoming stronger with every innocent life vanquished. After it gets a wielder, it uses their body for quite awhile, normally until they die. The name for the cursed sword's host body is "Nightmare" or "The Azure Knight".

After using the body for a long time, it will begin eating away at the person's soul, destroying all of the goodness inside their heart along with all their memories, eventually killing them. Many can agree that there is nothing that Soul Edge could possibly tell them that would trick them into taking the blade and meeting this terrible fate, but the spirit of the cursed sword is extremely persuasive. If it wants you to be its wielder, you will become its wielder eventually. There is almost nothing you can do about it...even the bravest souls will give in someday if it sincerely wants them to become the host body. Soul Edge makes huge promises of riches, glory, fame, and love to convince them.

Some whose lives were ruined by Soul Edge met a fate worse than death. Soul Edge doesn't just want to eat souls and destroy lives, bringing calamity...it also wants slaves, people to help it find souls and bring misery...thus corrupting those it doesn't kill into what is known as a Malfested. Malfesteds usually lose themselves, both physically and mentally. Some get corrupted differently than others, but the most common corruption to these poor souls is that they think of nothing but Soul Edge and anything relating to it.

There are some Malfesteds who have not completely lost themselves, and some who were corrupted in such minor ways that they're hardly different from you and I, but they are all outcasts as everyone fears them regardless of being fine people.

Nobody knows how to end this calamity...there is a fabled sword known as the Spirit Sword that is controlled by a spirit destined to to destroy Soul Edge with the help of a wielder, but nobody has ever seen it, and nobody really believes in it anymore. And nobody dares to search for it in fear that they'll run into Nightmare along the way.

The cursed sword wants somebody new to wield it. I know it does. I can feel it. The last Nightmare is now dead...

Somebody is going to become the Azure Knight soon. And somebody is going to have to end this, permanently.
