CHAPTER SIX

Melody sat in the extremely full cafeteria. Usually she would sit alone. Even if people were looking for seats and there were free ones beside her, no one would sit there. Today, for some reason, seemed to be different.

On one side of her sat Jez and on the other Jason. Across from her was Chase, who was contently reading a book and occasionally looking at her. It felt so unusual-so unreal to have people surrounding her, to have friends.

Melody sighed and looked down at her lunch try. She felt overwhelmed. Sure, she loved the company, but it was all so sudden, so unreal.

From beside her, suddenly, Jez began bouncing up and down. Melody looked over at her new friend, fearing an explosion.

"Chase! You wouldn't believe who was in my math class!" Jez's eyes sparkled excitedly, like she had just found out of a very important secret. Melody noted to not share secrets with the excited brunette. "Hannah Dupree is here," she shrieked, causing a few people to turn their heads in their direction and grumble. Usually it was very quiet where Melody would sit.

Unable to stop herself, Melody felt her face heat at the attention Jez was pulling towards the table. Jason seemed to notice and patted her hand with his large one. It didn't help though; Melody just felt her cheeks brighten as she looked down at her lap to avoid eye contact with anyone.

"I know Jez," Chase drawled, sounding amused though slightly tinged with annoyance. Melody looked up from her lap and saw Chase glancing at where Jason's humongous hand rested overtop of her small one. She blushed again and hid her hand in her sweater pocket. Chase looked noticeably happier.

"She was in my English class," he said. "She put on quite a show on when Ian showed up."

Melody couldn't help but feel her ears perk up at the mention of the mysterious, dark-headed boy that she couldn't seem to stop thinking about. She barely heard the giggle that came from Jez, "Well it would make sense; she is his girlfriend!"

Melody dropped the apple she had been in the process of picking up, her head aching terribly as it desperately scrambled for a memory that she couldn't seem to retrieve.

"Girlfriend?" Chase sounded doubtful, "Ian?"

Jez giggled again and for some reason it bothered Melody. "They were dating back at Hanson too Chase! Gosh, how can you not remember?"

Melody peeked up at Chase and saw that his eyebrows were furrowed, "I, I don't really remember much honestly... But I knew that Ian has never ever had a girlfriend."

Melody was staring into space now; she was so close to a thread of an answer. Jez's annoyed voice pricked at her ears. "I think I would know if Hannah had a boyfriend! I'm her best friend Chase," she hissed, "She would never lie to me."

"Are you sure about that?" said Melody, before her eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't meant to say anything out loud, and by the outraged gasp that came from Jez, it hadn't been the right thing to say.

The table shook a little on its little wheels as Jez stood up angrily from the table, her gray eyes flashing, "I think that you shouldn't be the one judging other peoples friends. You don't have any, do you Fairytale girl?"

Melody turned to glare at Jez and tell her off, that she was overreacting and being mean. But as she spun around and met the girls angry tornado like eyes, she felt her courage drain away. Melody turned back around and stared at her lap, a tear splashing back at her when it rebounded off of her glasses.

"So you cry too now?" Jez taunted, "Huh, Fairytale girl?"

Another tear splashed Melody in the face.
