Jasper could feel nothing but icy water surrounding her.

It was a sensation she was unpleasantly familiar with.

The strength of the waves, still managing to overpower her will dragging her down.

The salty ocean water stung her eyes, but she couldn't close them, not even for a second.

She pushed herself back up, just high enough to breath.

Despite the loud crash of the sea, she could still hear someone calling her name.

Over, and over, and over again.

It hit her whose voice it was, and she tried, desperately to find a way out of the blue abyss she was trapped in.

The voice, screaming for her became feverishly loud and shrill.

"Jasper! Jasper, help!"

The second she managed to comprehend the words, she was pulled back underwater.

Deeper and deeper.

_

Jasper awoke suddenly, muscles tensed, eyes wide. She never did get used to dreaming. Especially not nightmares. She calmed down slightly, realizing it was just a dream. What really put her at ease was the sleeping figure she cradled in her arms.

(Y/N) was tiny compared to Jasper, just as any human would be, but even more so as she lie, curled up in a ball on her chest. Jasper watched in silence for a few seconds, noting the steady rise and fall of (Y/N)'s chest as she slept.

Caring for humans was much more complicated than caring for gems, Jasper thought. With humans, you can't just check a certain spot on their body, you have to make careful observations on small, otherwise menial things. Even then, you couldn't always spot what was wrong right away. Sometimes it took weeks to get a simple diagnosis, let alone proper treatment.

However, despite all that, something deep inside Jasper assured her that (Y/N) was fine. As if detecting the gems awakening, she shifted, nuzzling into her. Jasper sighed, contentedly. How long had it been since she'd left the ocean now? Four, no, five months? Yes, five months since Malachite could no longer stand her own existence, breaking apart, sending both gems flying as far off as possible.

Jasper had yet to hear of where Lapis Lazuli ended up, and did not intend on visiting her when she did.

As luck would have it, (Y/N) had found Jasper, still soaked from the wretched ocean water she had so mercilessly been forced into, and took her in. Despite her immediate kindness, Jasper was hesitant to trust (Y/N). But, eventually her grudge faded, leaving behind affection in its place. Try as she may to deny it, (Y/N) returned those affections wholeheartedly, albeit too shy to speak them.

Laying there, in the dark warmth of (Y/N)'s room, Jasper found herself facing the dawning realization that she had to protect her. (Y/N) had no clue how dangerous the world around her was, and Jasper was not planning on letting her find out the hard way.

(Y/N) had long since admitted to herself that she had dedicated herself to Jasper's well being. She did everything she could to make her life easier, following her like a puppy almost all day. Soon, (Y/N) had figured out about Jasper's night terrors. One night in particular, (Y/N) had left her room sometime in the night for water to find Jasper standing near her door.

"Jasper, holy fuck! It's like three in the morning! Why are you up? O-oh God, are you crying? Hell, woman what happened?" Jasper had promptly wiped tears from her eyes, before trying to speak. Try as she may, she was too unsettled to respond.

That night ended with (Y/N) clinging tightly to Jasper, as if she were the one to have had the nightmare. In between the consoling whispers, (Y/N) had told Jasper that they would sleep together from then on. (Y/N) never realized just how small a king bed could feel, but welcomed the change.

"Jasp? You awake?" (Y/N) whispered, her head tilting up ever so slightly.

"Yes, (Y/N)." She whispered back. "What's wrong?" It was easy for Jasper to tell when something had upset (Y/N). The way her voice dropped an octave, and how her first call was always to make sure everyone around her was ok. That was one of the things Jasper had come to admire about (Y/N). Her selfless nature.

"Nothing. I felt you move and I figured you had a nightmare." (Y/N) sat up, Jasper's arms curling from their place, wrapped around her back. She brought a hand and up, tracing the outline of Jasper's face.

"I'm fine (Y/N). Are you sure you're ok?" Jasper cupped (Y/N)'s face gently with one hand, brushing aside her hair with the other.

"As long as you're here, I think I'm good." (Y/N) ever so slightly curled into Jasper's touch. It wasn't that she was just too shy to admit her love for the gem, it was the idea of possible rejection that scared her so much. Normal rejection is bearable, of course, but for a battle warrior such as herself to love a frail human like her? In (Y/N)'s head, it was out of the question. Despite this, (Y/N) was too tired, and too drunk off the sound of Jasper's voice not to fuck up at least once.

(Y/N) laid back down, tangling her hands in Jasper's hair, just as she always did and mumbled four small words. "I love you Jasper."

(Y/N), fell asleep before Jasper could overcome the stun of the words. Though, she couldn't properly respond now, it was a relief, knowing that her love for (Y/N) was returned. Boy would she have a story to tell tomorrow morning.
