“Good morning, Avery!” I said in a sing-song voice as I walked up to her cubicle. She stopped typing and looked up from her article at me.

“Um, morning,” she said, somewhat confused. “You’re in a really good mood.” I nodded.

“Sure am,” I said, reaching into the plastic bag I held. “Went by the bakery before work and picked up some sustenance.” I pulled out a small plastic box with a chocolate muffin in it and placed it on her desk. She just stared at it in bewilderment.

“Wow, um, thanks,” she said. I laughed.

“What, someone’s never brought you breakfast before?” I joked. She shook her head and looked up at me with a smile.

“Not really,” she told me. “Thanks, Savri.” I grinned.

“No problem,” I said. “Now, I have to fix up my cubicle and then get my first assignment from Sebastian.” She nodded and I walked around to my cubicle. I set down my bag and started to pull out what I had brought in. After a while, my bare little work space had transformed into a homey little area of comfort. I was scooting my bag underneath the desk and settling into my chair when I heard the elevator doors open. I looked up and saw a guy with shaggy blonde hair walking over.

“Morning, Avery,” he said and walked into the cubicle on my right. He must be Logan, I thought. Avery moved so that she could see over the cubicle walls and smiled at him.

“Hey, Cal. How was your day off?” she asked casually. Logan shrugged.

“Same as they always are,” he said. “I considered coming in just so I could have something to do.” Avery laughed and commented, “That slow, huh?”

“You would not believe,” Logan responded. Avery shrugged nonchalantly.

“Well, it can’t be helped, I guess. Oh, by the way, the newbie showed up yesterday and guess where she got placed.” Logan stood up and looked at me over the cubicle wall.

“You got number fourteen, huh?” he asked. I nodded. He grinned at me, his pale blue eyes shining as he did so. “Well, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Logan.” He extended a hand and I didn’t hesitate in shaking it.

“I’m Savrienna,” I told him. “But everyone calls me Savri.” Logan released my hand and looked at me.

“That is one spectacular name,” he said. I laughed.

“They all say that,” I said. “My parents certainly were the creative type.” Logan laughed.

“For sure,” he said. “So, did you get your first assignment yet?” I shook my head.

“Nope. I just finished decorating,” I told him, gesturing at the walls of my cubicle. He leaned forward slightly and looked around.

“Nice,” he laughed, straightening back up. “Well, I have to ask the boss about my next article, so I guess we could head in together.” I grinned at him and stood up.

“Sounds good,” I said. Avery snorted.

“Um, Savri, do you even know where Sebastian’s office is?” she asked. I blinked. Now that I thought about it, I realized that I didn’t. I laughed.

“Well, actually, no,” I said. Logan chuckled.

“All the more reason to take me along,” he said. “Come on, I’ll show you the Bat Cave.” He started to walk off. I glanced at Avery. She winked at me and then disappeared back into her cubicle. I smiled and followed after Logan. After a few moments of weaving in and out of cubicles, we came up to a large office on the twelfth floor. Logan knocked once on the door before heading inside. I remained hovering by the door.

“Hey, boss,” Logan said, walking up to the large oak desk in the center of the office. Sebastian looked up from what he was reading and gazed at the blonde boy. His slightly longer than typical black hair swept into his face slightly.

“Good morning, Cal,” he said. I blinked. Logan must really hate his last name if his employer called him by his nickname. “What can I do for you?”

“I was wondering if you have another assignment for me,” Logan told him. “Oh, and Savri is here for her first assignment.” He motioned for me to come over and I walked into the office. Sebastian glanced around Logan and smiled at me.

“Right then,” he said. He stood and walked over to a smaller desk in the corner next to a large picture window. He picked up a manila folder and a packet of papers.

“You can look through this and see if you want to do anything for the next issue,” Sebastian said. He handed the folder to Logan and then walked over to me.

“This is everything you need to know about the job,” he told me, handing me the packet. “Read it all, no shortcuts. Your assignment is at the end. Start on it as soon as you finish.” He walked back over to his desk and looked at the two of us.

“If you need anything else, I’ll be here,” he told us. Then, he sat back down and resumed his reading. Logan and I left the room and he closed the door gently.

“So, are you intimidated by him yet?” Logan asked me as we waited for the elevator. I shook my head.

“Should I be?” I asked as the doors opened. Logan stepped inside and shrugged.

“Depends,” he said. I stepped inside and he pressed the button for floor ten.

“On what?” I asked. He smiled and stared ahead at the doors.

“It depends on what kind of person you are,” he said. The elevator stopped and let us out onto our floor. “Take me for instance; I was dead afraid of him during my first month here.” I laughed and set the packet down on my desk. Logan tossed the folder onto his keyboard and gazed at me from his cubicle.

“Really? I don’t take you to be the nervous type,” I told him. He laughed.

“Yeah, well, I guess girls don’t really see the boss as anything more than something pleasing to the eye.” I gave him a questioning look and he laughed again.

“Think of it this way,” Logan told me. “Does he appeal to you and make you feel safe or does he make you want to hide under your desk.” I opened my mouth to respond and Logan slid into his chair and disappeared from sight. I sat down and thought about what he had said. Sebastian certainly was a little intimidating at times. But, then again, he made me feel as if I truly belonged here. I shrugged it off and opened the packet. I had quite a bit of reading to do.
