Chapter 1

I walked around the convenience store, looking at the microwave every now and then as the time ticked down.

Only 10 seconds left.

I felt my nerves intensify as the time ticked by and i prepared myself to run out the door.

A loud sound came from the microwave as a fire erupted from inside, making the door rip off its hinges from the impact. The can of beans now on fire. I looked as the security guard and store owner ran over and tried to extinguish the fire. I took this as my chance and took as much food as my arms could carry and ran out of the shop. I heard the security guard calling after me but i just kept running.

I was well known back when I went to school for being the fastest runner for my age. I even got an award! But that dosnt matter now.

I ran down a familliar alleyway as I made my way to a house where I've been living for years. I looked around and saw no one was around and I quickly lifted up the peice of card board that concealed the entrance, and walked in.

I went to the center of the little room, stepping around the sleeping children. I put down the food as quietly as I could and began to prepare the food for everyone, I made sure to keep some so we could have enough for a couple of days or a week if were lucky.

As soon as all the food was ready, I walked around waking up the four children that were huddled together to keep warm and to feel safe. They all got up and walked over to the table, their eyes barely open.

"C'mon guys, i got you some pizzaa" i said, drawing out the last word. I saw there eyes widen and i chuckled quietly at their reaction. They all ran up and hugged the living daylights out of me. I smiled lovingly and hugged them all back.

I gave them each a plate that held a slice of pizza and a few grapes. It was sadly all I could give them, having a job that payed less than it was worth being 6$ an hour at a fruit stand nearby but at least I did get to bring back a bit of fruit for them every time I worked. When I wasn't working I'd either stay here to keep an eye on them or I'd be aimlessly walking around town.

Well, maybe I should explain who I am. My name is Ellie. I was left on the side of the road at the age of 13, and I refuse to say my last name because it makes me related to the monsters who abandoned me. Ever since that age, I lived on the streets until I found this old abandoned house and have been living here ever since. I got a job but it sometime wasnt enough so I usually wouldn't eat for a few days at a time, but I got used to it.

Now, to explain the children who are living with me. Theres 4 in total, their names are, Annie, shes 7, Trevor who is 8, Eric who is 10 and Lily who is 11. Since none of them are old enough to get a job yet, im their only hope at survival in this cruel world.

*Flashback*

I was 17, walking down the street towards my house when I saw them sitting with their backs against a wall on the side of the road.

An old man was walking towards them and I thought it looked a little suspicious as he was eyeing the two little girls with a wide smirk on his face so I quickened my pace a little.

I saw him reach over, to make it seem like he was about to give the two little girls a dollard, and at the last second he roughly grabbed both their wrists and was trying to drag them both towards his car. I started running the moment he touched them and I made it their in what was probably seconds when I was a good 20 meters away.

"Put them down. NOW before i do something i'll regret." I said with a strong voice, dripping with venom.

The man turned around to see who talked and once he layed eyes on me, he smiled like he had just won the lotterie.

He took the little girls and threw them next to the two little boys, I heard a crack as their backs hit the wall.

I glared at the man and all I saw was red as anger took control of me, as he took a step towards me, I kicked my foot on his chest easily, with me being so flexible and sent him flying into a pole. He swore and tried to get up but I was already there, with my foot on his chest as I punched him in the face repeatedly, making him bleed. As I stopped, he was unconscious and I got up and wiped the blood off my hands and onto his shirt. I then searched his pockets until I found his wallet and a small pocket knife and took both, putting them in my jeans pocket.

I then without hesitation, picked him up and threw him behind a dumpster, away from the streets view. I walked back out and saw the four kids sitting there looking at me in shock and admiration. I walked over to them.

"Hi there, do you guys have anywhere to live?" I said with a kind smile. They all shook their heads sadly and i sighed.

"How would you guys like to live with me then? I dont want that to happen to you again, and people so young shouldn't be left alone on the streets. I'll keep you safe." A smile slowly slid onto each of their faces and they all jumped up and hugged me tightly.

*End of Flashback*

That memory is still clear in my mind as they held onto me tightly just a few minutes ago. I'll never let them get hurt ever again, never.
