***Mitch's Point of View***
"That everything?" I heard my mom call from behind me as I closed the door to our, now empty, SUV.
"Yeah I guess" I said readjusting the box I had resting on my hip and following her and my dad into the building. We made our way up the stairs and down the hall back to room 304. I set my box on the floor and looked over to my father who seemed to struggling with the large Rubbermaid container appropriately labeled 'Shoes'. "Need some help?" I asked.
"No I got it," He said with a long exhausted sigh as he placed the bin not so gently on the bed. "Would have been a lot easier if you didn't pack so many shoes though. And while we're on the subject, why are they all in boxes?"
"To keep them clean" My mother and I said, our synchronization startling dad and us both. We looked at each other and laughed as my dad rolled his eyes.
"Lets start unpacking, hopefully we can get most of this put away before your roommate gets here." My mom said heading for the bags of organized clothes labeled with duct tape and marker. The word 'Closet' written in bold letters.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out to see what it was. I slid the small hard to read message across the screen, quickly typed in my 4 digit code and waited. The group message Kirstie, Scott and I had open almost all the time popped up on screen.
Scott-zilla: Just left B ther soon 2hrs or 1 depending on who drives
Kitty Taylor: LOL I'm about 30 minutes out
I quickly typed my reply of 'unpacking' before shoving my phone back into my pocket.
"Kirstie's almost here, Scott just left." I said to no one in particular.
"That's good." mom said handing my dad something to put in my closet. I grabbed a box of school supplies and started to put them into my desk.
I expected putting everything away would take us all day but my side of the room was organized and set up in a little more than 40 minutes. All that pre moving organization I'd done really paid off. I knew it made a lot of people, especially Scott "Mr. Go-with-the-flow" Hoying, really annoyed with me sometimes but on certain occasions being picky af was a good thing.
"Alright kiddo, you're all set." my dad said wiping his hands together like he'd just been gardening, or doing some other dirty job. "Want to go get your books?" he asked.
I thought about it for a bit, then answered. "I think I'll wait 'til Kirstie and Scott want to go get theirs, and go with them."
"Okay. Well do you need anything else or can we head out? If you don't need us-"
"No!" Mom interrupted. "I want to meet his roommate." She said in an almost whine.
"Nel, we can meet him some other time." He turned to me then. "Unless you want us to stay Mitch?"
"I'm okay, I think." I said looking down at my phone when another text came through.
"Are you sure? There isn't anything we can help you with?" Mom practically pleaded. "I could reorganized your clothes?"
"Really dear, he's fine." Dad assured her. "I think we'll head out then."
"If you're sure." Something in her voice made me look up to her.
I rolled my eyes at her pathetic expression. She was welling up. The threat of tear imminent. The car ride home was about to be rough for the both of them. "I'll be okay mom." I smiled at her and pulled her in for a hug. I looked at my dad over her shoulder and saw the look of amusement and maybe even a little sadness in his features. They were both going to miss me, and I was going to miss them.
