It's been a year now , the army drives their tanks up and down the streets, at least we think it's the army. The tank always stops in front of our camp, just sitting there waiting for something to happen. Nobody gets out to see if we are ok, there is no sound at all. After it sits there for 15 minutes, it goes back to patrolling the streets for the rest of the day.
July 4th, 2031
It's July 4th, the night is pitch black with a million shining stars. Then out of the blue I heard a large crash over in the shadow of an office building, it sounded like a bunch of glass bottles breaking. Like a hawk I keep an eye out for the area where I heard the strange noises. Time passes and nothing happens, "must've been a rat or something." Luke said to me with a southern country accent, knowing it would make me laugh.
It's midnight and I'm already starting to drift off to sleep, but I couldn't sleep for long. The sounds of glass shattering on the ground opened my eyes in surprise. Quiet moans could be heard from the shadows of the office building. "Hey Luke get your ass up here.... I don't think rats can moan." I glared through the scope searching for any sign of life.. or undead. Two small child like figures can be seen through the night. From what I see they're both glaring at me, picking up their pace slowly until there sprinting in my direction. Based on how they look I can't tell whether or not they're human, or 'alive'. Luke grabs his gun and aims at what looks like a little boy, as I am at what might be a little girl. With our fingers on the trigger we begin the countdown...3...2......"DON'T SHOOT" a voice screams at us. Nearby a herd of walkers must have heard the scream because before you know it there they were chasing the young ones. The two kids were darting right for our camp as the voice called out again, "Please save us!"
Without delay I pulled up my gun and closed in on the hungry followers behind. One by one their heads lit up like bombs, falling hard on the ground emotionless. "Cover me", I yelled to Luke as I flew down to unlock the gate. It took all my strength to try and open those doors, with guns a blazin I motion for the two kids to hurry their butts up.
They were only about twenty feet away when all of a sudden the young boy tripped on a corpse and fell into the cement, gashing his left knee. He lied there screaming with tears pouring down his red cheeks. Not noticing what happened the little girl ran to the gate sweaty and exhausted, and looked back to see her brother lying on the ground helpless.. I frantically told the girl to stay inside the camp, as I ran to the boy. Knowing he had to keep moving he attempted to drag his body as far as it could go. Cutting up the injury more on the gravel he hollered at the agonizing pain. With the shooting stopped I knew I could safely carry him to the camp without worry.
Within a second I made it to where the boy was and picked him up making sure not to worsen his injury. "You're heavier than you look," I quietly said to him, he grinned, but only for a few seconds. I walked into camp and I set the boy down on the picnic table we have just outside the RV.
"BELL!" Luke yelled, I turned around and to my surprise a tank was rolling up to the camp. I ran to the gate to lock it, and a voice from the tank arose, "I'll be back," The mysterious voice shouted.
